The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is a post-season championship held every year in March and April at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Madison Square Garden was opened in its current location in 1968 and has a seating capacity of 19,763 for basketball games. The Garden is the current home of the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, and the National Invitation Tournament.
The NIT is a single elimination tournament that was first started in 1938 - a year before the NCAA Tournament. For years the NIT was considered to be the most prestigious tournament in college basketball, but by the 1960s, the NCAA Tournament was widely considered the more important of the two. Today the NIT is looked at as a consolation prize for those teams who couldn't make it into the NCAA Tournament.
The 2012 winner of the NIT Tournament was Stanford and notable NIT MVPs have included Kosta Koufos, Dajuan Wagner, Voshon Lenard, Bryant Stith, Reggie Miller, Ralph Sampson, and Walt Frazier.
