The New York Marathon is an annual race that courses through all five boroughs of New York City and is one of five World Marathon Majors around the globe. The race’s origins date back to 1970 where only a little over a hundred runners participated.
Today, the race plays host to 40,000 runners, with the top runners vying for $600,000 in prize money. The New York Marathon course always finishes at Central Park where thousands of spectators cheer on the runners as they trudge through the final mile. Events at the New York Marathon take place all week before the race including the Marathon Eve Dinner in Central Park, and the race is always held on the first Sunday in November. The current New York Marathon record holder is Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya with a time of 2:05:05.
During the race, the city’s bars and restaurants get filled by 10am, especially along 1st Avenue starting in the 60s through 125th in Manhattan. Race fans and event fans in general drink all day as the racers run by, cheering them on and joining in on the fun. In Brooklyn there are designated entertainment zones where live music bolsters the runners especially along 4th Avenue in Park Slope and along Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.
