A tradition that has been a part of Rockefeller Center since the 1930s, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is a signature holiday experience in New York City.
Every November, an enormous tree is hoisted into the Center’s courtyard and decorated with roughly 30,000 lights – which require nearly five miles of wiring – and a 550-pound star is placed on the tree’s top.
Free to attend, the ceremonial Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting usually takes place on November 30th, drawing a mass audience to the Center. The lighting is also broadcast nationally on NBC, so the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting draws several million viewers to their TVs as well.
After the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting, the tree remains lit till the first week of January.
