Die-hard fans of comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies, and television unite in blissful nerd-dom every October for New York Comic Con – and what better place to do it than Gotham City itself?
Although not affiliated with the über-popular San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con is one of the East Coast's biggest pop culture conventions. Visitors to NYCC enjoy four days of panel discussions, autograph sessions, and, of course, a whole mass of merchandise for sale.
Screening rooms also feature sneak peeks of films and television shows months before they are released.
New York Comic Con got off to a rocky start back in 2006. Reed Exhibitions, who run this for-profit event, had never organized a comic convention before, and facilities at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center weren’t ready to handle the massive crowds who showed up.
Since then, Reed has moved New York Comic Con to the much larger Javits Center, which is able to handle the more than 100,000 fans regularly in attendance.
Tickets to New York Comic Con range from $35–$100 per day depending on how early you buy them and which days you plan on going, and tickets regularly sell out so it’s wise to check the official website well in advance of the event to take advantage of presales. Onsite purchases are often not available due to the number of advanced tickets sold.
