Situated thirty stories high on the top of the Kimberly Hotel, Upstairs is a luxurious penthouse lounge where a moneyed professional crowd gathers to relax and admire the stunning views of the Chrysler building.
Once past the opulent black-and-white marble hall, patrons find a grouping of indoor/outdoor spaces with retractable walls and ceilings, including a main patio splendidly decked out in leather and black wicker wingbacks, intricate wicker tables and ottomans, twinkling lights, and a long aluminum bar adorned with a stenciled filigree pattern.
During the week, the venue fills up with conservatively-dressed business people and ladies in cocktail dresses, who show up to chat with colleagues over after-work whiskeys or to network and mingle to a background of ambient jazz, while weekends draw a younger, but still affluent, clientele.
Two partially covered dens fitted with pewter leather banquettes, white linen curtains, and suede padded walls offer an intimate atmosphere for cocktails and conversation, while guests in search of a more exclusive vibe can check out the decadent private room with its gold-detailed sofa, burgundy area rugs, black chiffon curtains, flat-screen TV, and neoclassical wooden bar.
A smaller outdoor patio with ivy-draped walls and a rough-cut marble fireplace attracts a contingent of the upper-crust, who filter in to recline in red-cushioned wicker cabanas and socialize before heading out to their weekend homes.
While the ambiance at Upstairs is definitely sophisticated, the friendly patrons create a refreshingly unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere for a low-key evening out.
Younger professionals on Fridays and Saturdays. Older professionals, corporate types, social networkers, and occasional celebrities during the week, late 20s to 50s.
DJ plays ambient lounge music Thursdays through Saturdays from 5pm to midnight. The private room has a large flat-screen TV.
Upscale French-American small plates menu including grilled calamari, foie gras crostini, and spiced duck cigars. Special catering menu for events. Impressive list of over 175 wines.
Menu $7–$22. Beer $7, wine $9, cocktails $10–$20.
Business and casual cocktail attire: suits, shirts and ties, dresses, heels.
Summer Thursdays for the fun-loving, end-of-the-week Hamptons crowd, or Wednesday and Friday nights for a mellower crowd.
