First celebrated centuries ago by the Egyptians (as the beginning of the Nile River’s flooding season), the Summer Solstice now marks the commencement of the warm summer season. Every June, New Yorkers find a variety of festivities in one of the most diverse cities in the world.

Summer Solstice events start with Solstice in Times Square: Mind over Madness Yoga. There, thousands of yogis crowd the transformed outdoor studio of 42nd and 47th street to meditate under the sun’s welcoming rays. Over at Battery Park City, the New York City Swedish Midsummer Festival 2015 offers a family-friendly Summer Solstice celebration with midsummer pole decorating and Swedish games.

Dance lovers flock to Midsummer Night Swing 2015 for dance lessons, live music, and exciting performances. Meanwhile, the River to River Festival encourages participation from spectators as dance, theater, and music fill the green spaces of Lower Manhattan. This Summer Solstice festival gives art lovers of all kinds a unique opportunity to discover different art forms throughout the city.

With an eclectic list of Summer Solstice festivities, New York is the place to be on June 21.
