44th Annual Village Halloween Parade Description

Village Halloween Parade - Costume Party | Festival | Holiday Event | Parade | Party in New York.

A mammoth Halloween celebration in New York’s Greenwich Village, New York's Village Halloween Parade extends more than a mile down a selected neighborhood street (often 6th Street) every Halloween night, and routinely draws more than two million spectators.

Even more impressive, the number of participants in the Village Halloween Parade normally includes fifty thousand costumed revelers, circus performers, dozens of floats, and an international television audience of tens of millions.

Multiple live bands normally perform atop the floats as the massive Village Halloween Parade makes its way down the street, but the procession is probably best known for the giant puppets that are invariably in attendance; giant creations articulated by teams of master puppeteers that include everything from soaring fantastical birds to life-sized mammoths.

New York’s Village Halloween Parade has been a staple of the city’s Halloween scene since it debuted in 1974, and features a different theme every year to inspire participants’ costumes and performances. The theme shortly after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, for example, was “Phoenix Rising,” and included a huge puppet of the mystical bird symbolically rising from the ashes.

Anyone is welcome to march in the 2017 Village Halloween Parade so long as they are in costume, with many marchers gathering well before the official 6pm line-up. Usually at around 7pm, the enormous puppets and themed performers begin to make their way down the street, followed shortly thereafter by the floats and the tens of thousands of marchers.

Once the Village Halloween Parade 2017 reaches its official end – normally 21st Street – the party is far from over, as endless costume parties at area bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and throughout much of the city await.
