Every year filmmakers and movie buffs from all over the world come to the Gotham Screen International Film Festival at Quad Cinemas in Lower Manhattan. Since 2007, the Gotham Screen International Film Festival has featured and premiered documentaries, shorts, and feature films for ten days every October. With a film and screenwriting contest, the festival has helped launch the careers of countless directors, screenwriters, and actors including the director Tate Taylor, whose Gotham Screen premiere of Pretty Ugly People helped launch him into the future success of The Help.
Past films featured at the Gotham Screen International Film Festival include Jean-Luc Goddard’s Film Socialisme, Occupant by Henry Miller, How to Be starring Robert Pattinson, and Radio Free Albemuth by Philip K. Dick. The Gotham Screen Film Contest awards international films in categories like Best Feature Films, Best Cinematography, Best Documentary, and Best Short Film. The awards help emerging international films get broader worldwide release and the Best Short Film Award comes with a $1,000 prize. Past award-winning films at the Gotham Screen festival include The Rice Paddy (La Riziére) by Xiaoling Zhu, Underground Hip Hop in China by Jimmy Wang, and “Pablo on Wheels” by Brett Sorem.
Tickets to the Gotham Screen International Film Festival start at around $10 to $20 depending on the screening. Watch the world premiere of a feature film or catch a series of shorts by creative young directors. And be sure to RSVP for the free closing night party before it fills up to capacity.
