Unsurprisingly, New York film festivals are plentiful and run the gamut from glitz to grit. After all, the Big Apple is a hub of art and culture, a face made evident by the movies set in its metropolitan labyrinth. From Taxi Driver to Working Girl, Annie Hall to Spiderman, New York is anything but camera shy.
The larger film festivals in New York, like the Tribecca Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the HBO Bryant Park Film Festivals, have all become local staples, bringing out the celebrity element while treating locals and tourists alike to a taste of some of the best international and independent films on the market. But still others, like the CBGB Festival or the Coney Island summer film series, use the city’s many underground clubs and grottoes to show underappreciated classics. In general, these film fests drag in local bars and restaurants, turning a movie marathon into a neighborhood-wide event and bringing in vendors and promoters from all over the country.
As varied as the ethnic backgrounds on a given subway car, NYC film festivals help keep the city’s art culture alive, inviting fans – and stars – of the big screen to swing through and experience the city’s cinematic magic.
