Chinatown Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony 2013 Description

Chinatown Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony - Festival | Holiday Event | Special Event in New York.

Since 2000, New York’s Chinese American community has celebrated the Chinese Lunar New Year with an annual firecracker ceremony. Held each year on a Sunday in February, the Chinatown Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony features a wide range of cultural activities in Chinatown. Each year over 200,000 New Yorkers and visitors pack Sara Roosevelt Park in New York City for the annual Lunar New Year celebrations.

The Chinatown Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony features a massive and colorful explosion of 600,000 rounds of firecrackers. This tradition is meant to scare away evil spirits and helps kick off the New Year with a bang. Every year, dance troupes, community leaders, and singers entertain guests as food vendors fill their bellies with traditional Chinese foods and drinks.

The Chinatown Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony celebrates the traditions and cultures of all Asian countries including China, Korea, and Japan. The Chinatown Lunar New Year Firecracker Ceremony is free, and all ages are welcome to celebrate the Lunar New Year with this age-old custom. After the celebrations, enjoy traditional foods and drinks at the restaurants, bars, and cafés nearby in Chinatown.
