Eric Clapton was born in England on March 30, 1945 to Patricia Clapton, who was just 16 at the time, and Edward Fryer, who was a soldier and sent to war just before Eric’s birth. Clapton was raised by his grandmother and her second husband and actually though that his mother was his older sister. Clapton’s musical passion grew when he received a Hoyer guitar from his mother, who had moved to Germany when she remarried and left Eric in England. Clapton’s current blues and rock style was influenced by the first band he joined at the ripe age of 17, The Roosters.
After touring with a number of blues and rock bands, including The Bluesbreakers, Clapton was invited by drummer Ginger Baker to form a new band, called Cream. In joining Cream, Clapton’s reputation as a one of Britain’s top guitarists grew and the band became a commercial success, hitting top charts in the UK and the United States. Clapton’s record of awards indicates that he is one of the most influential guitarists of all time, which include being the only three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ranked as second in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and fourth in Gibson’s Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.
