Depeche Mode Description

Depeche Mode

New Wave band Depeche Mode was formed in England in 1980 with members Dave Gahan (vocals), Martin Gore (keyboard, guitars), Andy Fletcher (keyboard), and Vince Clarke (keyboard). Clarke left the band in 1981 and was replaced with Alan Wilder, who left in 1995. Probably the most electronic band of all time, Depeche Mode has had twelve top-ten albums in the UK. School friends Clarke and Fletcher joined with Gore for the Cure-influenced band Composition of Sound. When Gahan joined them, they changed their name to Depeche Mode after a French fashion magazine called Dépêche mode (roughly, “fashion dispatch”). Among the band’s synth-pop hits are “Enjoy the Silence,” “Personal Jesus,” “People Are People,” “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Strangelove,” and “Everything Counts.” The surreal video for “Enjoy the Silence” won a Brit Award and was one of the most popular videos shown on MTV. In recent years, the band has headlined Lollapalooza.
