Chelsea / Flatiron, New York –
Styled after a bordello and hidden behind an unassuming pair of industrial doors, Secret Lounge is a small, hip-hop heavy gay club-cum-speakeasy that attracts a regular clientele of African American and Latino men – as well as the folks of every other race/persuasion/gender who love them.
Rich flocked wallpaper covers the single room venue, a space lined with tufted sofas and bulbous Victorian couch islands where muscular hunks and young clubbers can take a quick break from the tiny smoke- and laser-filled dance floor.
Although the nightly DJs occasionally stray into Top 40, the focus is clearly on bumping rap mixes that prompt plenty of booty shaking, whether by the hunky wallflowers cooing at the gym rats or by all the ladies in mini dresses who know they can get as freaky as they want without anybody hitting on them.
Bartenders at the bar in back sling a lot of the venue’s signature cocktail – a Strawberry Long Island – although they have to make room for the thong-clad house dancers who regularly turn the bar into a platform as they gyrate and stuff hard-earned dollars into non-existent pockets.
(One of them may, or may not, be wearing a strap-on.)
Loud, proud, and fun all night, Secret Lounge is a cool and intimate spot for Chelsea’s gay and gay-loving partiers who like their nights extra-spicy.
Gay dance hunks, young club rats, booty-shaking straight girls, and gym addicts, 20s to 30s.
Hip-hop, Top 40, and dance music spun by various DJs. Live male dancers.
No regular food, though venue does host special catered parties. Club can be booked for private events.
Cover charge $5+, sometimes free before midnight. Beer $6–$7, wine $9–$12, cocktails $6–$12.
Club attire: tight shirts, nice jeans, fly kicks, dancing shoes, bling, sexy dresses.
Fridays through Sundays from 10pm to midnight to avoid the cover and relax before the crowds flood in, or after midnight to get busy on the dance floor.
Eagle Bar NYC (554 West 28th) is another happening gay hotspot that’s all about the leather.
