Party Earth Review: Known as “the Church” by its faithful followers, Nevada Smiths stands as New York’s premier soccer bar – although competition for that title isn’t terribly stiff. On any given day, jersey-clad Brits, Aussies, and waggish American soccer hooligans crowd around the huge projection screen to slam pints, pump fists, and scream vulgar team anthems to the heavens. Although framed jerseys and banners for various teams cover the spacious single-room pub, Manchester United claims the most real estate and assumes the role of de facto home team. Soccer isn't the only game in town, but Nevada Smiths’ sports allegiances remain staunchly European, with the occasional basketball and football game taking a backseat to rugby and cricket, both on the flat-screens and in the hearts of the boozy regulars and international NYU students downing drafts at the bar. Beneath the watchful eye of Steve McQueen, whose 1966 western gave the pub its name, the bar becomes an understated nightlife hotspot on weekends, with live Irish bands, and the occasional dance party erupting near the small stage in the back. On off nights, the guests are more subdued, though all it takes is a live Premiere League contest to trigger patrons’ pint-swigging and arm-jabbing instincts. Definitely not for the faint of heart (or liver), Nevada Smiths is a must for any NYC soccer fanatic whose devotion never hits stoppage time. ... read full review |

“If you don’t plan on drinking until closing time, stop at an ATM before the game. The bar takes credit cards, but its $15 minimum could bum you out more than 120 minutes of nil-nil soccer.”

With as much character and rowdiness as any bar in the city, McSorley’s Old Ale House (15 East 7th Street) is a New York institution that takes drinking beer every bit as seriously as Smiths takes soccer.
