WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK –
A warm and stylish slice of the Big Easy right in the heart of Williamsburg, Maison Premiere is an oyster and absinthe bar catering to the more discerning hipsters of Bedford Avenue.
Founded by Le Barricou’s Josh Boissy and decorated by John and Kevin McCormick of Moto and Smith & Mills fame, the venue provides a swanky hideout for the vintage-clad young professionals who fill the semi-circular front room during the weekday Happy Hours to sip old-world rye cocktails and sample the impressive, 20 or so, variety of oysters.
Around the other side of the central bar, laid-back couples enjoy cocktails around marble café tables soaking up the coziness of the black-and-white photographs on the walls and small pot-bellied stove in the corner.
Daring patrons ready for an encounter with the Green Fairy can make their way to the circular bar, whose multi-levered bronze absinthe tap – not to mention the absinthe fountain modeled after a French Quarter statue – serves a wide variety of the potent nectar, though there are plenty of fine wines and craft beers to satisfy the less adventurous.
While the weekends bring in big crowds of roving foodies and absinthe lovers, Maison Premiere always maintains a lively vibe more focused on conversation and fine food and wine than on wild parties.
Patrons looking for a little taste of New Orleans charm will find it at Maison Premiere, whose flawless décor and relaxed ambiance make it a perfect getaway to the Big Easy right in the heart of Brooklyn.
Young professionals, older hipsters, classier punk rockers, Williamsburg foodies, and couples, mid-20s to 30s.
Ambient jazz and French café music.
New Orleans-style raw oysters. Happy Hour M–F 4–7pm.
Oysters $1+. Beer $7+, wine $7+, cocktails $9+.
Upscale hipster chic: vintage suits and dresses, nice jeans, suspenders, fedoras, pea coats.
During Happy Hour Mondays through Thursdays for the $1 oysters, and Fridays and Saturdays for the biggest crowds.
A few blocks away is Rye (247 S. 1st Street), a classy little eatery with a famed meatloaf sandwich.
