A classic neighborhood bar located between two eclectic, party-loving areas, Automatic Slims definitely packs in the best of the Meatpacking clubbers and artsy West Village revelers.
By day, the sun-filled venue with its black-and-red checkerboard floor, whitewashed walls, and vintage photos of musicians and celebrities seems more like a quaint café, but once Happy Hour begins, so does the sloshy fun.
Flowing taps and a DJ spinning a nightly mix of everything from Bon Jovi to Jay-Z bring in a rowdy crowd of trendy locals, college students, and ex-frat boys that packs the tiny space to the rafters.
Friendly bartenders keep everyone well lubricated, while sweaty dancers fill the floor space or elbow their way to the small tables for a breather and to admire the collection of dominoes and toy cars preserved under the Plexiglas.
Despite being a popular event space for small fashion shows and industry parties, the lively bar is blissfully free of pretention, welcoming Wall Streeters, industry workers, and weekend warriors with equal zest. In fact, the only prerequisite for having a good time at Automatic Slims is to show up.
After-work young professionals, post-college frat guys, financial types, retail and service industry workers, and college students, 20s to 30s.
Nightly DJ spins a mix of pop, rap, and dance music.
Bar menu includes burgers, fries, salads, and quesadillas. Happy Hour M–F 5:30–8:30pm.
Appetizers $8+, salads $8+, entrées $11+. Beer $6+, wine $6+, cocktails $8+.
Business casual: comfy dresses, flats, nice sneakers, button-downs with jeans, blouses with skirts or slacks.
Thursday through Saturday nights for the busiest scene, or any weeknight for Happy Hour.
The Standard Biergarten (848 Washington Street) has a similar crowd and, in nice weather, is a great outdoor space for a beer.
