The Haus der Kunst (House of Art) is a non-collecting art museum located just north of central Munich at the southern edge of the Englischer Garten.
The building was constructed between 1933 and 1937 as a showcase of Nazi architecture. Originally the museum was called the House of German Art. The original exhibition was designed to showcase Germany’s finest art and artists.
After WWII occupying American soldiers designated the building P1 because of its address, Prinzregentenstr. 1 and used the building as a casino and officer’s mess hall. In 1946 the building once again began to host small art exhibitions and trade shows.
While the venue houses no permanent art exhibition of its own, it is still used as a space for temporary and traveling exhibitions and exhibits at Haus der Kunst have included, Tutankhamen, the Zeit der Staufer and Gilbert and George exhibitions.
Beginning in 1983, the Haus der Kunst has also housed the nightclub, P1, one of Munich's most famous high-society destinations.
Located underneath the museum, P1 holds the title for Munich’s “most noble” and “coolest” club. P1 also boasts one of the hardest door policies in Europe.
