The Deutsches Theater in Munich’s Freiman-Harthof district was established by Naturalist playwrights in 1896 as a stage for spoken drama. Only a year later, the theater evolved into the Bavarian Royal Residence’s most glamorous variety venue.
A number of A-list stars that have performed at the Deutsches Theater over the years, including the Bavarian comedian Karl Velentin, the magician David Copperfield, Josephine Baker, Klaus Kinski, and Richard Chamberlain.
Since 1982, the Deutsches Theater has belonged to the city of Munich and has presented international shows from Broadway and London’s West End. Musicals at Deutsches Theater have included Grease, Chicago, West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar. The dance troupe Stomp performed at the Deutsches Theater in 1997.
Capacity at the Deutsches Theater is 1,600, making it Munich’s second largest theater.
