Both the name and the large red bulldog logo out front will be familiar to historians: Founded at the turn of the twentieth century and named after a satirical newspaper the Nazis banned before WWII, Alter Simpl has always been the meeting place for a somewhat underground crowd of Munich’s writers, painters, and musicians, particularly those with a revolutionary bent.
Photos on the walls pay tribute to these intellectuals who viewed Alter Simpl as a haven during tumultuous times. Over a hundred years later, the bar’s history and ambiance still draw a diverse mix of students, professionals, and intellectuals in search of a mug of beer, a plate of authentic Bavarian food, and the exchange of ideas.
The rustic interior features dark wood tables, smoke-stained walls, and dim lighting and exudes an intimate vibe conducive to serious conversation.
With its mellow atmosphere and friendly patrons, Alter Simpl offers a relaxed night out that's off the beaten path.
Students and professionals of all ages.
Eclectic mix of music; pretty much everything one never hears on the radio.
Bavarian menu includes soups, salads, hearty meat dishes, vegetarian dishes, and traditional desserts.
Appetizers €3+, entrées €7–€14. Beer €2.70+, cocktails €7.50+.
Casual.
Any day for lunch or Wednesday, Thursday, and weekend nights for the biggest crowds.
