Both the name and the large red bulldog logo out front will be familiar to historians: Founded at the turn of the twentieth century and named after a satirical newspaper the Nazis banned before WWII, Alter Simpl has always been the meeting place for a somewhat underground crowd of Munich’s writers, painters, and musicians, particularly those with a revolutionary bent.

Photos on the walls pay tribute to these intellectuals who viewed Alter Simpl as a haven during tumultuous times. Over a hundred years later, the bar’s history and ambiance still draw a diverse mix of students, professionals, and intellectuals in search of a mug of beer, a plate of authentic Bavarian food, and the exchange of ideas.
