Maxvorstadt, Munich –
A bit of an institution in the neighborhood surrounding the university, Schall und Rauch is consistently one of the most crowded venues on the street.
Clean and homey, this small café and bar features candlelit tables and a long wooden bar staffed by attentive servers – a sparse yet inviting look that attracts a young, relaxed crowd that enjoys good food and great companionship.
By day, the space is often a meet-up point for local students who gather to discuss their classes over cake and coffee, and summer sees the wall of windows thrown open and patrons spilling onto the sidewalk.
By night, meanwhile, friendly young professionals join the mix to sample the diverse cuisine and chat over a few beers.
The vibe definitely gets rowdier on the weekends as the music gets louder, but Schall und Rauch is a solid choice for unpretentious fun almost every night of the week.
Sociable, down-to-earth students and young professionals, 20s.
House and techno music.
Menu includes pasta, a selection of Thai and Italian specialties, and Bavarian dishes, served until 11pm.
Menu €5–€8. Beer €3.20, cocktails €7.50–€8.50.
Tuesday and Friday nights after 10pm are very popular. The weekends attract a lot of students.
