Consistently voted one of the world’s best bars for its to-die-for cocktails, Schumann’s Bar am Hofgarten in the center of Munich is truly a must for any cocktail connoisseur.

Beloved among German celebrities, athletes, and society’s upper crust, chances are patrons will bump into someone famous on any given night of the week. A few tables with dark leather banquettes are usually reserved, so on crowded nights, guests can expect standing room only.

One of the bar’s biggest draws is that Charlie Schumann himself, with his sleek, slicked-back silver hair, is almost always behind the bar and ready to mix one of his legendary signature cocktails – and if a guest’s favorite drink isn’t on the menu, he’s more than happy to oblige.

The upscale female patrons, who seem to gather in droves with their designer handbags and elegant evening-wear, are soon joined by a cadre of handsome, wealthy companions. Throw in a mix of after-opera customers and plenty of investment bankers, and the scene is set for a night out at Schumann’s.

Despite the rather elite clientele, the clean and simple décor and low lighting keeps the vibe mellow, though the stylish patrons have been known to belt out classic rock songs at the top of their lungs in the wee hours.

Those planning a night out with a group should make a reservation a couple of days in advance; otherwise, it’s enough to arrive a bit early, grab a seat near the well-stocked bar, and watch the master Schumann work his trade.

The Bar of German Bar-legend Charles Schumann
Jan B. Apr 10, 2013
This is the place were most of Germany's mixology has started. In "Schumann's" only the top bartenders and mixologists of Germany are allowed to apply here. One has to keep in mind that Charles Schumann was the inventor of some of the most drunk cocktails in the world, such as "Swimmingpool" and "Flying Kangaroo". These have been created at that bar (has to be said at this point that the original bar moved to a different location) The ambient is classic cocktail bar of the 20ties and 30ties. White blazers behind the bar is the standard attire. Just as classic is the cocktail menu. With a staggering amount of classic cocktails and many twist-versions of these the menu is very sufficient. And even if the drink you would like to drink is not on the menu, the staff is so well trained to make you whatever you want. The success of "Schumann's" also spreads onto his prodigies. Stefan Gabanyi (former bartender at "Schumann's" and writer of a whisk(e)y-lexicon) opened up his own bar called "Bar Gabanyi" last year, in Munich. The prices sometimes seem umreasonable, but you have to reconsider that you not only pay for the price of a drink and atmosphere, but also for belonging to a piece of cocktail-history. And that makes it just about reasonable again.
