Crocodiles, kangaroos, koalas, and surfing paraphernalia take up all the wall space, and dark décor and dim lighting creates a secluded cavern-like atmosphere for the loyal following of Australians and other English-speaking expats that frequent Ned Kelly's Australian Bar.

Patrons can say hello to the statue of Ned Kelly, the legendary Aussie outlaw, and read about his life and times while perusing the menu, which includes ostrich and kangaroo dishes that are especially good alongside a nice cold mug of beer.

Clearly designed with sports and beer in mind – a huge projection TV shows major sporting events on the weekends, including NFL football – Ned Kelly’s also draws a crowd for its roster of daily live music that features Irish bands, R&B, and rock and roll.

There’s always a lot going on at Ned Kelly's Australian Bar, but the main focus of the fun-loving clientele is live music, good drinks, and great food.

Tip from Lucas:

Thursday nights are especially entertaining as the flirtatious and booze-induced Aussie crowd really gets into the bar’s English-language karaoke.

  • Crowd

Laid back and sociable, mid-20s to 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Live music seven days a week features Irish bands on weekdays and rock and roll and R&B on weekends. Karaoke Thursday nights. Occasional theme parties.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Menu of Aussie specialties includes shark steaks, burgers, and ostrich curry. Ned Kelly’s shares its space with the adjoining Kilians Irish Pub (same owner), but is separated by a corridor.

  • Prices

Burgers €7+, ostrich medallions €11.90, shark steaks €10.20+. Beer €3.60, wine €4.20, mixed drinks €8.40.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

    Casual.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Weekend nights are always fun, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons can be busy if there’s a good game on TV.

A Kiwi on Australian soil.

For a Kiwi (aka New Zealander) in Munich its nice to feel like you've returned home for a little. Well almost home. You've actually only made it to Australia. But it was good to hear some similar accents, even if they were Australian (Aussies and Kiwi's have a love/hate relationship). The bar isn't so bad with a good backpacker Aussie atmosphere you would expect and a fun place to sink a few "bevys". I went with a couple of Germans who found it good fun to strike up a good old Aussie accent and we all met some fun new friends. We also had a game pool. It got a bit loose later in the evening, as you would expect in an Aussie Backpacker Bar, but nothing too out of hand. Sadly (but as you would expect with Australian beer) theres only really one slightly drinkable beer here when you exclude the German brands, and that is being really nice. Fosters is just drinkable after the 6th beer. But they have Bundy and Coke which is superb. I wouldn't mind if Ned Kelly went and stole some beer from New Zealand next time he's doing a run back. All in all not too bad. When to visit this bar: - When theres some rugby on. - Especially All Blacks aka New Zealand Rugby Team vs Australia (this would be a big night so be prepared). When not to visit: - Just after the All Blacks beat Australia........ unless your a Kiwi, then it would be a good laugh!
Typical backpacker's bar

I would say don't come here because there's nothing Bavarian about it, but if you're looking for a place to hook up with backpackers then go for it! Definitely DO NOT SLEEP HERE, the hostel is always noisy and nuts. But I'd give the bar a few stars because of the pool table and the most memorable game of my life I played with an expat from Louisiana who ran some hot dog stand. He beat me, but I didn't make it easy, and his eyes kept bulging out of his sockets... he was twice as tall as I was with a thick slang and intimidated the hell out of me. But everyone else was cool and my other friends all had make out partners by the end of the night.
