Madrid Nightlife Areas Overview

Party happy Madrid has no shortage of bars, clubs, lounges, concert venues, and every other permutation of nightlife imaginable, and there are definitely a host of Madrid nightlife areas worth checking out no matter what kind of night you are in the mood for.

One thing to keep in mind, of course, is the night doesn’t really get going until LATE in Madrid, and showing up anywhere – especially clubs – before midnight can often result in a fairly staid experience. Those looking to get in on one of Madrid’s ubiquitous cave bar (cuevas) crawls can’t go wrong near Plaza Mayor or Puerto del Sol, especially along Cava Alta, Cava Baja, and Cava de San Miguel.

Plaza de Isabel and Plaza de Oriente are very popular Madrid nightlife areas for tourists, while the main thoroughfare of Gran Vía – known mostly for its big theaters – offers lots of cool after dark action down its smaller side streets.

Chueca, meanwhile, is best known as Madrid’s gay nightlife area, with dozens of gay clubs and bars running down Barquillo, Hortaleza, San Lucas, and Infantas Streets. University kids tend to pack the nightlife areas of Argüelles and Moncloa, where everything from budget-friendly dance clubs to raucous bars stay busy all year – especially after big exams have let out.

No matter where you roam in Madrid, chances are there’s a good number of drinking and dancing dens open late nearby. So if one nightlife area in Madrid isn’t cutting it, you’ve got plenty of other options to keep the party going till dawn.
