Tropical cocktails liberate the inhibitions of the laid-back crowd at La Negra Tomasa, an animated Cuban music bar where waitresses dressed in traditional island attire serve up Cuban favorites like mojitos and special black bean dishes.

The cluttered décor features countless photos, posters, vintage advertisements, newspaper clippings, and other bits of Cuban memorabilia, and it is against this backdrop that the sociable patrons sip cocktails at the small three-sided bar or grab a place at one of the long tables to enjoy an authentic dinner and the perpetual sounds of salsa and Afro-Cuban beats.

The breezy, carefree atmosphere is only enhanced at night, when tables are pushed together to accommodate the large festive groups that gather to catch an island buzz and jam to the Cuban melodies of the live band performing on the makeshift stage in the corner.

Whether local or visitor, young or old, the patrons at La Negra Tomasa are a diverse, fun-loving crowd ready to cheer on the band or break into a bit of impromptu merengue dancing.

Tip from Emma:

Anyone who likes the island vibe will want to start the night with the tropical drinks and live music at La Negra Tomasa. The side of the bar near the band is the best spot to soak up the atmosphere and the music. The place really fills up on the weekends, so to get one of the coveted tables near the stage, it’s best to show up a good twenty minutes before the show starts at 11:30pm.

In the mood for dance!

Now, this is the place for the salsa lovers! It is a restaurant during the day but as the nights falls in, there are live concerts of salsa, merengue, reggaeton, almost every day (you can check the schedule hanging on the bar for your favorite group). Tables are moved to the sides and people dance wherever they can while some finish they diner or enjoy the homemade mojito, specialty of La Negra. In the past few days, they decided to give their everyday clients a surprise and those who stay until 4 a.m., before the bar closes, will see what has been prepared, a concert maybe? some special dance? oh, and if you are lucky, you can even meet her. La negra Tomasa likes to wander around her bar, dancing and chatting with the clients... and some say that she can even read your future!
Fun cuban-style bar

La Negra Tomasa is a fun bar to stop by during a night it. It is not far from Plaza del Sol where there are tons of restaurants and bars and whatnot. It is a Cuban bar so you get something a little different than you would from the other bars in the area. You get a very distinct island feel and immediately want a mojito when you walk in the door. Every time i've either been in or passed by at night, there has been some musician playing inside. I really enjoy La Negra Tomasa and have never has a bad time there.
