While punk rock’s golden age is long gone, Spanish punks have been keeping the scene alive and well with the annual Festival Mundo Idiota in Madrid. In the spirit of punk patriarchs like The Clash, Dead Kennedys, The Exploited, and Black Flag, venues like Sala Caracol and La Riviera present the best Spanish punk bands for a weekend-long festival in October.
Since 2008, Festival Mundo Idiota (Idiotic World Festival) has been bringing out the best local talent in punk genres ranging from speed to horror to gutter punk. Bands like Siniestro Total, Gigatron, El Reno Renardo, and Lendakaris Muertos thrash like it’s 1977, sticking a stiff middle finger to the mainstream music industry and reminding the rest of the world that punk’s far from dead.
Tickets to Festival Mundo Idiota start at around €18 for daily tickets to €29 for the weekend pass. After seeing your favorite Spanish bands and discovering something new, check out the rest of Madrid’s vibrant punk scene at the bars nearby.
