Central Madrid is well known for its cueva bars (cave bars) – subterranean dens with arched ceilings and dim lighting where Spaniards have gathered for centuries to share drinks and noisy conversation. One such bar is Las Cuevas de Sésamo, particularly famous for being one of the best places to savor the traditional fruity red wine concoction known as sangria.
Not just a drinking joint, the bar also enjoys a reputation for its zeal for Spanish art and literature, as evidenced by an impressive collection of paintings and walls covered in fancy-font literary quotations from the likes of Cervantes and García Lorca.
On most nights, this artistic atmosphere is enhanced by a resident pianist who provides gentle background melodies.
Despite the high-brow theme, Las Cuevas de Sésamo is a fun and classy locale where Spaniards from all walks of life engage in loud and lively discussions in the series of small, intimate rooms or in the two larger caves.
Mostly locals, 20s and 30s.
