Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays Description

Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays - Food & Drink Event in Los Angeles.

Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays is when select merchants hold extended shopping hours on the first Friday of every month in Venice, Santa Monica, and Marina Del Rey. The event was created in 2008 to spread brand awareness for Venice shops, and quickly spread to include the community’s neighboring towns.

Starting at about 6pm, many local merchants roll out special prices, new products, and more. Also, the best food trucks in Los Angeles always make an appearance at Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays, drawing throngs of crowds who are willing to wait up to an hour to order their food of choice. It’s also a great evening for those who love music, as many bars near the action are sure to have energetic bands playing live tunes to attract customers.

Free to attend, Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays gets very crowded. For Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays parking, look to the surrounding residential streets for spots and always try to carpool. Get there early to beat the inevitable crowds.

My Take: I live in Santa Monica and ventured over to Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays for some good grub at a nice, different setting than your standard restaurant and was happy with my experience. It takes a little while to wait in line for your desired food at your favorite food truck, but if the weather is fine – which it normally is in California – the wait is not bad. You have enough time to catch up on your Facebook and Twitter. The Scene: A lot of the post grad Santa Monica crowd makes their way over to Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays, as well as young professionals who live on the Westside and want to get outdoors after a tough Hollywood work week. If you weren’t sure, Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays is in Venice, so there’s certainly the classically weird vibe that only Venice can provide. At Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays, hipsters, bros, and hobos collide for a fun night. Cocktails & Cuisine: There’s enough of a food variety at Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays for the whole family… in fact the whole extended family! Virtually every super popular food truck in Los Angeles comes here and posts up, knowing their clientele – both old and new – will come in droves. If you can’t find something you like here, you must have a general dislike of eating. In terms of cocktails, your best bet is to load up on some delicious eats and head into a local bar like Nikki’s, The Venice Whaler, or Venice Ale House. Prices: Standard food truck rates apply at Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays. Kidding. But seriously. Make sure to bring some cash – just in case – but don’t expect to spend too much unless you’re taking a date. If that’s the case, you might have to fork out $25 at the most. If you’re not willing to do that, you probably shouldn’t be on the date anyway. Insider Info/When to go: Since it only happens on the first Friday of every month, I’d say to go then. However, I say the earlier the better. The later the night gets, the more people get off work and it can take a VERY long time in line at your favorite truck. Furthermore, they might run out of your favorite dish.

I'm new to LA, but I've been obsessed with Venice for years and years. My LA born-and-raised friends are always telling me how great certain things here used to be. One of them is Abbot Kinney 1st Fridays. What used to be a fun night of art browsing, shopping, and eating great food has turned into nothing but a food truck nightmare. Coming from New York, it's not such a big selling point to me for stores to be open until 10pm...this should be the norm! Even so, it seems that the stores and galleries that you really want to see are never open for first fridays. And maybe we can't blame them because who wants to leave their doors open to wild packs of people walking in and out with messy tacos and cheesesteaks. ...Let's not get me started on the arrival of Lucky Brand.
