Every Super Bowl Sunday in late January or early February, upwards of 20,000 people gather for the Surf City USA Full and Half Marathon, a pair of distance-running events that follow the iconic coastline that Southern California is best known for.
The Surf City USA Full and Half Marathon courses both begin on the Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, taking runners along past the Huntington Beach Pier before heading east through Huntington Central Park.
It’s back to the water’s edge by mile 10, where the half marathon competitors soon call it a day as the full distance runners follow an S-loop down PCH and then up and down a beachside pathway to the finish line.
All races begin to the soundtrack of the Beach Boys' “Surfin' USA”, and surf-style bands join cheering spectators all along the Surf City USA Full and Half Marathon route.
Surf City USA Full and Half Marathon entry fees start at $110 for the full marathon and $95 for the half, though both fees can increase in the final months leading up to the event, so get up off the sand and register early if you want to join in the fun.
