Normally taking place near the end of September, the Herbalife Triathlon Los Angeles has been an active member of the triathlon scene since 2000.

The Los Angeles Triathlon course involves two variations to accommodate different ability levels, making it a popular event for both newbies and more seasoned competitors. The Sprint race includes a .4-mile swim, a 14.1-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run. The Olympic race, meanwhile, demands a .9-mile swim, 24 miles of biking, and a 6.2-mile run.

Both Los Angeles Triathlon routes begin with a dip in the ocean at Venice Beach, wind through Venice and the Fairfax District, and end at the LA LIVE complex in downtown Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Triathlon fees range from $175–$230 for Olympic competitors and $160–$225 for Sprint competitors. Early registration (which affords the biggest discount) usually opens up in December, giving entrants nine full months to work up from a doggie paddle into a slightly more effective swimming technique.

Bike-only, youth-only, 5K, and relay categories are also available during the Los Angeles Triathlon. Shuttle busses are provided for spectators who want to catch the race’s start in Venice and also witness the finale at LA Live. Shuttle tickets run $30.
