jsunmatthews Nov 28, 2012 3.0 stars A Strange (Almost) Bit of Normal off the Hollywood Nuthouse Aw Hollywood Boulevard, you odd and indescribable beast. Your trannies, your homeless, your wannabe actors, your guys dressed as Spiderman, your wandering tourists, your prostitutes, your failed stars, your kitschy shops. You are like the perfect setting for the scariest David Lynch movie ever. Pig 'n Whistle doesn’t escape your oddities. In fact, you never really know whom to expect inside. But I’ll say this, Pig: You are still a fairly classy joint, with lovely design done by the same guys who did the Egyptian Theater right next door, and seeing as you’ve been around since the 1920s, I think you deserve a look. There’s a high and beautiful carved ceiling inside. There are several TVs to catch the game. There’s a decent Happy Hour every day from 4–7pm AND 10pm–midnight with $3 drafts, $4 house wine, $5 wells, and $5 apps. Your food is fine, in fact I would go as far as to say your bangers and mash is very good, though I also can’t blame you for not trying too hard given the heavy tourist crowd. Your karaoke on Wednesday and Thursday is the stuff of legend. I have heard some of the best and some of the most horrifying talent here. I will attest the same for your live bands/DJs who take over the back room Wednesdays–Saturdays. In truth, you are like that crazy uncle we all have. You look good for your age, you dress up well, and you’re usually quite fun to hang out with. Sometimes you fart without realizing it. And some of your friends probably belong in a mental institution. But I still love you.
