Though the in-crowd may have moved on, the Hotel Mondrian’s elegant Skybar still offers jet-setters and affluent internationals a sexy playground both day and night.
Those wealthy or attractive enough to slip through the discreet white door on Sunset Boulevard will want to stop by for the afternoon pool scene, where hard-bodied guys laze on white lounge chairs, peering through designer sunglasses at the beautiful girls in bikinis and heels strolling by with their cocktails or swaying to the DJ’s beats.
Once the stars come out, fashionable social butterflies, business types, and hotel guests flock to the bar in the open hut, whose teak wood flooring, ivy-covered walls, and high white-draped windows overlooking the twinkling LA skyline create an airy and luxurious atmosphere.
Leggy model-types and their admirers lounge on plush yellow and gold banquettes and oversized ottomans to chat and flirt, or take to the dance floor when the DJ turns up the volume on the Top 40 and hip-hop.
Romancers can slip down a level to the illuminated pool to take in the incredible nighttime panorama, or go one level lower to the garden-like area, where more cushioned seats among the trees offer a place to get close with a bit more privacy
Definitely not for those on a budget, Skybar is nonetheless an excellent place to splurge on a night out for chic patrons who want to feel like they’re on top of the world.
You have to be on the guest list to get into Skybar on most nights, so other than springing for bottle service, the best way to get in the door is to make a request by phone or e-mail – just see the website for info. Then again, you could always book a hotel room for a more scandalous evening…
