Party Earth Rooftop Bar at The Standard Downtown Review

The Scene

The A-listers may have moved on, but the ultra-mod Rooftop Bar crowning The Standard Downtown hotel still offers a swanky environment for sipping cocktails under the stars.

Downtown, Los Angeles –

The A-listers may have moved on, but the ultra-mod Rooftop Bar crowning The Standard Downtown hotel still offers a swanky environment for sipping cocktails under the stars.

A bird’s-eye view of LA and a funky décor featuring animal topiary and red AstroTurf greet fashionably-dressed patrons as they step onto the terrace level, where a diverse clientele of international travelers, hip artsy types, and young professionals lounge on low ottomans for relaxed conversation.

By day, hotel guests in bikinis and swim trunks dominate the scene as they cool off in the long pool or catch some rays, while by night, the pool glows blue as the creative crowd sways gently on white rocking chaises and watch movies projected onto the high rise opposite the roof.

Those who prefer a more sociable atmosphere can mingle with the other chatty guests gathering at the bar and fire pit or head for the crowded dance floor, while frisky hipsters might slip into the signature red waterbed pods for a bit of privacy.

Although a mellower vibe during the week gives way to a flirtier and more rambunctious singles scene on the weekends, Rooftop Bar is always spot on for some of the coolest stargazing in town.

Kyle Lawrence Apr 25, 2013 3.0 stars Bier! I have never been to Germany or an Octoberfest but as soon as I stepped foot into the Beirgarten my German roots immediately came out. From the authentic steins, German foliage and trademark benches to the delicious free smells of wursts and pretzels to the beautiful trendy looking crowds that arrive, this place is heaven. When entering the Biergarten you are greeted by a nicely German dressed ticket booth attendant who sells you tickets based on your food and beverage desire. For $8 you can get a roughly 22oz stein of German heaven (light or dark depending on your preference) or brawts and pretzels if your in the mood to munch. Everything in NYC is pricey $$, but the Biergarten definitely gives you your moneys worth with this deal. I feel like every time I visit NYC, I am scavenging throughout the city to get myself a Corona and lime for under $10. Well maybe sipping on a cold one with your crew isn't enough? Well the Biergarten offers their guests access to two ping pong tables to screw around on. Me and my buddy messed around on one the tables and had a blast for about an hour. The ball kept rolling all over the bar area and managed to not disrupt anyone's time or business operation....THANK GOD! The whole atmosphere and experience is amazing! It is a great place to start off your evening with your crew before hitting the velvet ropes down in the meatpacking district later that night. GREAT FOOD, ATMOSPHERE, STAFF and of course BEER! You'll definitely thank me for making your day, year and possibly life by stepping foot into this memorable establishment!
Madeline Joyner Apr 17, 2013 3.0 stars Ultimate Summer Hangout Looking for a spot to spend those hot Los Angeles days and nights? Look no further, The Rooftop at the Standard Hotel its the place to waste away your summer days. The rooftop pool offers dazzling views of Downtown Los Angeles and the peaking Mountains beyond. The Rooftop's modern decoration, red turfed floor, and impressive bar attract crowds from all over the city. The pool area wraps around the top tower, more like a porch rather than one large area. The layout offers different views of the city and different areas to lounge during the day or dance all night to one of their great DJs. Get to The Rooftop early to take advantage of their great happy hour prices on food and drinks. Lounge around on one of their water beds or couches while you soak in the sun. It never gets too crowded and the crowd is always energetic and fun. Stay all night and dance or, if you are looking for a little more of an upbeat night, take advantage of the happy hour prices and view, then head elsewhere. But if you are in LA for the summer, you will not want to miss this spot.
dubbz1106 Mar 26, 2013 3.0 stars Great experience This place is really fun! I went spontaneously one day with a few friends and we had a blast. I must warn though that the line to get in (especially on the weekends) is extremely long so be prepared to wait in line for at least 40 minutes. Another option is to arrive really early, or get a rich friend to book a hotel room for the night at the standard because it comes with two free entries to the bar (not sure if it was just because I went on the day of a show). The DJ's and the music was amazing, especially while we danced on a rooftop with a (somewhat obstructed) view of downtown LA. The crowd is very hipster, avant-garde, and relatively young. Definitely not a place to go to if you're broke though...simply because to have fun here you're gonna have to dish out some cash, know what I mean?
UCLAKER Mar 25, 2013 2.0 stars Cool spot This is real cool spot, it be the business ya feels. The honies be swarming ya if you got swag. If you got that mula, then you balling forreal ya digg. JM33 Mar 25, 2013 3.0 stars Great view and awesome for hot summer days/nights You can't go wrong here. I always bring visiting friends because it's a very impressive place. The view is fantastic and there's always a good mix of people. They added a beer garden which has upped their game a lot.
Les Serrano Mar 22, 2013 3.0 stars Nice View, but could be better! This bar is really nice since it is located on a rooftop in the heart of downtown LA, but it could be better. Maybe I'm comparing it to other rooftop bars in New York, but it does not have that great of a view because it is not that high and other buildings are taller. The bar has a pool and some loungey type of furniture that accents the whole bar scene. It is a pretty relaxed type of bar not crowded and it is a perfect location to go and hang out with friends. The only downfall is their drinks, they are overpriced and can taste watered down.
El La Mar 4, 2013 3.0 stars The Quintessential LA Scene Whether you're an Angelino or visiting from out of town, The Standard Rooftop Bar is one of the best places to sum up the LA experience. After conquering any traffic to get downtown, you'll be greeted with a line that can wrap around the block (unless you arrive early). The rooftop is complete with bars, a pool, loungey areas with couches and retro furniture and of course, a dancefloor. Usually filled with trendy Angelinos and tourists, The Standard attracts a fun, stylish, yet un-pretentious crowd. The Sunday day party also brings in some of the local underground clubbers, with promoters booking the best local DJs and tech-house from overseas. Being LA, good weather is almost guaranteed. During the day, patrons get an expansive view of the city, and swim in or lounge by the pool. Nighttime is lit up by the high-rises and stars overhead, a packed bar and bumpin' dance floor. The crowd is social, friendly, and always LA-hip.
Valerie Younan Mar 3, 2013 3.0 stars Beautiful View I went here with a friend for the first time last November on a Wednesday night, and it was very nice. A good amount of people, so that we were able to find seats, and move around to change seats a couple of times, to experience different seats, but it wasn't desolate. I had a couple of drinks, but I didn't pay for them, so I didn't mind the price. My favorite part was the view! It overlooks downtown, so watching the nightlights from a roof was GORGEOUS! And there’s a pool on the roof, which adds to the romantic ambience. There are also water-bed pods. Great place for a date!
Lisa Waugh Feb 22, 2013 2.0 stars The Standard Downtown, Standard Place for the LA Thrill When people come to visit me, I try to give them a nice mixture of tourista stuff mixed with local stuff. One of my favorite places for the LA stereotype is The Standard Downtown. It's so cliche, it's awesome. The drinks are over priced and the staff and crowd are ridiculously hip but that's the draw. Plus, the view is pretty stellar for a city that has a perpetual identity crisis. I save this place for friends who are looking for that thrill when seeing LA for the first time. They want to see stars, glamorous haunts and spectacle. The Standard is perfect for that, sans the stars. It goes on the tour with The Dresden, Musso and Frank and the posher places around Downtown, Hollywood and the Westside. Visiting friends love the movie projected on the building across from the bar. The pool is a nice touch. My friend, who is a DP and shoots there a lot, calls the seating around the pool "big red sex apples." I've seen some stuff there that would back that up to a certain degree. Another downside is that they need to do a bit of upkeep. The place is looking a big ragged from the wear. It's easy to understand. The Standard gets used quite a bit. I'd also recommend it for a nice place to wait out traffic if you need an oasis. Perfect for meetings with out of towners, birthday drinks, closing a deal on a script and other industry doings.
MisterMahuron Dec 12, 2012 2.0 stars Great Location, not a Great Bar If this bar was located on ground level, I would likely never visit it again. The drinks are overrpriced and of sub-par quality. Also the fact that the bar requires cover on weekends is a huge turn-off. That being said, this is probably one of the cooler bar locations I have been to in Los Angeles. The view is impeccable. Nothing like drinking a cocktail while staring over downtown. Overall, definitely worth checking out (though I would suggest on a weekday with no cover charge), even if to just drink in one of their many waterbeds.
nishashah Dec 7, 2012 3.0 stars Rooftops are great When I went to the Rooftop Bar at the Standard, I had no problem getting in right away. There was no line at all, probably because it was a Wednesday night. The bar/lounge attracts late 20 something and 30 something working professionals still in their suits looking to wind down after work, and the occasional student from FIDM or USC. I was kind of surprised when I went to order a drink at the Standard. It wasn’t the price that shocked me, but rather the tastelessness of the margarita. For $11, I was not impressed at all. I like that the Rooftop Bar is so spacious. You can choose to sit at one of the small tables by the balcony, lounge in the ottomans by the bar, or get comfy in the waterbeds near the pool with friends. No matter where you are in the bar, you are guaranteed a great view of Downtown LA. The décor at the Rooftop Bar at the Standard is really simple and very modern with red and yellow accents. The bartenders were dressed up in festive holiday costumes, which I thought was a fun touch. Overall, I experienced a pretty chill and relaxed vibe when I was there. I can only imagine that things get rowdy though in the summer during the weekend though.
Eva Laskowski Dec 5, 2012 4.0 stars Always a good time This bar is so amazing - the view is great, the lounge areas are comfortable, and the drinks are delicious (although rather overpriced). The crowd here can definitely be on the older-ish side but that does not make it any less of a great time. Come with the right groups of friends and you will absolutely have a great time. Make sure to try this venue out on a hot summer night when you can go and just hang out with your friends after a long day of work. The Standard is one of the best places downtown just make sure not to spend too much!
missyf Dec 4, 2012 4.0 stars great - especially for a young crowd this is a really great place to go with a beautiful view! drinks are a little more pricey than some other place but youre paying for the "experience" - right? lots of college kids go here as well as those who are recently graduated. you can always find a young crowd here - but its not to say that older people dont go either.... on the weekends it gets really crowded so i would recommend going during the week (then there wont be a cover charge either)... either way going out in downtown there are only a few good "it" places and i would definitely consider this one of them.
sholmes55 Dec 3, 2012 3.0 stars Good View, Great Drinks, Fun Time THE CATCH - My five stars is only if you go here on NOT a Friday or Saturday night, where there's a 20 dollar cover & the douche-factor must go up ten-fold. I came on a Sunday evening with a group of six friends and we had a lovely time. The deck is roomy and gorgeous, with stunning mid-level views of downtown. There's a biergarten where they serve such delicacies as currywurst and bratwurst, and the drinks are obviously expensive but not over the top ($9 for a rum and soda, $10 for a glass of red wine). They have these strange enclaves with water beds that you can sit in and they have a fireplace and heat lamps. It's really an awesome space, just come on a night where you can have conversations and it's not overly crowded.
bburgess Dec 3, 2012 2.0 stars good view The Standard rooftop bar is a great place to take someone from out of town to get a good view of the city life and cityscape. In terms of food, the menu is limited. It has a german theme and there is a portion of the roof that is labeled the biergarten. They serve small salads and various forms of hotdogs/ sausages. However despite the lack of variety on their menu their drinks are strong and it is well worth the view. There is a pool you can swim in during the day and the ambiance is well worth a visit.
sarahbink Nov 28, 2012 4.0 stars So fun The view of the city is worth a visit. It will not disappoint. Drinks by the pool will delight everyone in your party, it's very LA!
Maddy Lansky Nov 28, 2012 2.0 stars Overrated but pretty Drinks are expensive, the line is usually long, paying a cover sucks, and the guys inside are creepy. However, if you're out with a good group of people and want to enjoy a pretty view of the city for a little bit, this is a nice spot.
ahoughta@usc.edu Nov 28, 2012 3.0 stars Mediocre It is a fun place to go if you want to see the city and downtown. However, drinks are overpriced and it tends to be filled with creepy men. Fun for a girls night out though. Great view of the city.
Carolina Ivey Nov 28, 2012 3.0 stars Cool, Fun The Standard is a good time. Nice atmosphere overall. The scene can be a little pretentious though, but welcome to Los Angeles.
Mareika Vandeveer Nov 28, 2012 4.0 stars Always a good time. Definitely one of the best rooftops in LA, the standard bar consistently delivers. With a great view of downtown and poolside mod-pods to relax in, you’ll definitely enjoy yourself here no matter what mood you’re in. Whether you’re looking to lounge in the California sun with drink in hand, meet some interesting people, or just party with friends this place is really a jack of all trades. All day, all night, the rooftop at the Standard will cater to your partying needs. The new-ish beer garden they added is also very cute, though I suggest staying away from the sausages…
Ana Sessions Nov 26, 2012 4.0 stars Best Atmosphere With weather like we have in LA, why not enjoy the usually mild nights under the stars at a swanky outdoor rooftop bar? Or during the day, enjoy a cocktail poolside or a snack as you lounge in one of the ultra-modern water beds provided for patrons. I actually kind of like that it is not abundantly "scene-y" since it means more relaxation and a laid back vibe. The beer garden is also a nice touch. It feels like its own venue separate from the hotel, and The Standard hotel is not bad itself. I would recommend getting a room for the weekend to fully enjoy all that the hotel has to offer. Prices aren't bad either!
Samuel Anene Nov 25, 2012 4.0 stars A Must Stop Hipster haven? The spot for young professionals? You really can’t go wrong either way with the Standard in Downtown LA. What used to be “the it venue” in Los Angeles has maybe lost a bit of its luster, but the killer view and gorgeous people continue to set it apart. I personally have never stayed at the actual hotel, but the rooftop bar is more or less the main attraction. During the summer there are sun drenched pool parties, while at night it doubles as one of the most elegant venues in LA. If you’re coming through Los Angeles this is definitely one of the landmarks to stop through!
Keira Rogers Nov 25, 2012 3.0 stars Awesome Rooftop The Standard is the most popular rooftop bar in downtown LA. It is on the top of the hotel but you definitely don't feel like it is a tacky hotel bar. The drinks are great, I recommend the Lemondrop. The bar is very modern and trendy and there is quite a diverse crowd that goes there. On a friday or saturday night you will mainly see people who are out for the night. However, on a weeknight around 6 or 7 you will see a lot of people who are going there for a drink after work. The pool is awesome for during the day.
Lindsey Sugimoto Nov 20, 2012 4.0 stars LOVE I love the rooftop on the standard- I was able to go a couple times this summer with friends and it is gorgeous. You can see all of Downtown LA from the rooftop. It is very modern and trendy- the rooftop is mostly a place where young people go in Downtown Los Angeles, as there is a full bar and parties happening. You will find a lot of college students there, as it is right near USC. I definitely recommend to go check this place out, as it really is in the heart of Los Angeles and is an amazing experience.
Rachel Golden Nov 17, 2012 4.0 stars Oh La La I have never even stayed at this hotel, but I have spent many of my hot summer days at the rooftop for various pool party's. The hotel it's self is gorgeous and quite a special feeling to stay in, the tip top of this hotel holds an even more gorgeous pool and has some of the greatest pool parties for the socialites of Los Angeles. The rooftop has a very modern and chic feel to it to accommodate the young hipsters and chic people of Downtown Los Angeles that attend their pool parties. Full bar and full of fun. I would command you check this place out ASAP.
