Los Angeles Mardi Gras Overview

Mardi Gras, one of the biggest parties of the year, emerged as the last hoorah for Christians preparing to observe 40 days of lent. The pseudo-religious celebration, which lasts from King’s Day to Fat Tuesday, has since blossomed into an iconic festival where the mantra for revelers of all shapes and sizes is overindulgence.

While New Orleans has long been recognized as the Mardi Gras capital of the world, the wide array of Mardi Gras events in Los Angeles means that you can experience an authentic, no-holds barred Mardi Gras celebration in the heart of SoCal. Those looking for a more cultural experience can indulge in steaming pots of gumbo and enjoy fantastic parades at the weekend-long LA Farmers Market Mardi Gras Festival, while more avid party-goers can go all out at any one of the 2014 Mardi Gras parties in the city. Either way there will be more than enough purple, green, and gold beads to go around.

Mardi Gras season often overlaps with Carnaval, a similar celebration popular throughout South America and the Carribean with the largest festivities taking place in major Brazilian cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Just like Mardi Gras, Carnaval events in Los Angeles feature vibrant parades, elaborate costumes, dancing, and plenty of food. The main difference being a preference for glasses of Caipirinhas instead of bottles of Abita as the beverage of choice.
