HARD Summer Description

Disco might be dead, but Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is alive and well. The EDM genre has come a long way since it was popularized in clubs and warehouse parties in the 1980s; stud DJs Avicii, deadmau5, and SHM now make millions of dollars by performing in packed houses around the globe.

HARD Summer in Los Angeles is a celebration of EDM’s progress, its contemporary artists, and its up-and-coming stars. Founded in 2007, HARD is an American festival, music cruise, and concert brand started by DJ Gary Richards, who performs under the moniker Destructo.

HARD Summer has rapidly become L.A.’s definitive dance-music festival, attracting thousands of young, exuberant concertgoers looking for an insane dance party. In the past, crowds have been treated to the performances of Skrillex, Bloc Party, Little Dragon, and Nero.

Over the course of two days, L.A.’s downtown provides a bright, beautiful backdrop for festivalgoers to lose themselves in the sweet sounds of the numerous eclectic acts.

Tickets to HARD Summer in Los Angeles normally begin around $99 for a two-day pass.

Natalie Turner May 21, 2013 If you are looking for 2 days of endless head-bobbing, rapid jumping, and bass tickling every nerve in your body...then HARD is where you need to be! This unique summer festival located in one of L.A.'s most beautiful parks set against the downtown skyline has continued to shock and impress fans year after year. With its 7th anniversary coming up this year, HARD has continued to book more acclaimed and world renowned producer/DJs, drawing increasingly larger masses to the festival. The beauty about HARD is that all acts are conveniently located within short distances from each other, making the process of switching from stage to stage incredibly easy. Additionally, the specific niche of dubstep, electro house, and trap genres filters out "self-proclaimed EDM-heads" and instead attracts true fans of the genres featured. The crowd at HARD embraces the true meaning of a community gathered to revel in the music, rather than having thousands of shrieking 15-year-olds rolling their faces off just to "prove their unwavering loyalty to EDM." This year's line-up has blown every other year out of the water, and is in my opinion one of the best line-ups of all summer festivals occurring throughout the entire U.S. With headliners such as Bassnectar, Justice, and Knife Party alongside up and coming talents like Duke Dumont, Paper Diamond, and XXYYXX, it is really impossible to distinguish between the acts written in small and large font. I promise you this: it will be extremely HARD to find a festival that tops this one!
Victor Hernández Oct 3, 2012 This years lineup was really good. I wanted to go but wasn't able to :/
arndthewaygrl Oct 2, 2012 HARD Summer was such a great event! I'm truly grateful for my brother for gifting my boyfriend and I these tickets! This was my first year attending the festival, so I look forward to attending future festivals. The music and the vibes were great. the ambiance was killer. With these types of events you just have to come to terms with the fact that there is no ladies room! Its a free for all in those port-o-pottys! So ladies beware! Stages were placed perfectly I had no trouble running from one stage to the next, I didnt miss any of the headliners, which is pretty important! All and all I look forward to next summer!
Natalie Moyce Sep 6, 2012 HARD Summer was amazing this year! The LA Historic Park is such an awesome venue; the best meeting spot is on one of the hills under one of the floating lanterns. There were plenty of people but it wasn't too crowded at all, which was awesome because I could actually stand right at the front. Water is cheap and there's plenty of places to buy it, and the venue had five stages but none of them were that far away from one another, so I was able to jump from set to set super easily. The outdoor stage had surprisingly good sound, but the tents were my favorite; they had put down some kind of rubber padding on the ground so we weren't dancing on gravel or uneven ground, and the screens and lights were unreal. I'm definitely going to Day of the Dead there in November!
Jennifer Lee Aug 16, 2012 Surprisingly awesome lineup this year. As an individual who has been to several HARD events including HARD Haunted and New Years, Hard Summer has been by far the most enjoyable and worthwhile. For $70, the Friday lineup included Little Dragon, Boyz Noize, Surkin, Gesaffelstein, Bootsy Collins, Action Bronson, Breakbot, Danny Brown, Bloc Party, A-Trak, and Chromeo among many others, it was not a bad deal at all! The location, LA Historic Park is in the heart of chinatown and in perfect viewing of the surrounding skyscrapers of nearby Downtown. The warm summer nights and residual heat from the daytime contributes greatly to the atmosphere of the mini festival, all the more reason to break out those chewabacca boots and tutus! The food truck phenomenon all across America is no exception at HARD, and the huge park setting allows a broad selection of vendors, with organic and vegetarian options available, of course. The sound system is brilliant, and the huge plot of land allows room for 4 stages, 2 outdoor and 2 tents. Stage hopping isn't a problem, as it only takes about 5 minutes to walk across the opposite sides of the festival, and the crowd wasn't too heavy, due to the event being split into 2 days. Parking isn't too much of a hassle, as it can be found in nearby streets of chinatown, or another option for commuting is the Metro rail's goldline, which fare is inclusive with your HARD ticked and extends it's hours until 3 am. All in all, the event is always a well organized event, but this summer lineup in particular proved to be a successful event that wasn't all about the candy, but mostly about the music, a conviction that can so easily be lost in previous HARD events.
