Los Angeles is known for being on the progressive edge of art and music. In celebration of the city’s love for innovation and experimentation, the biggest names in jazz have come together for the 2012 Angel City Jazz Festival. Since 2009, jazz icons and emerging young artists have performed for the festival over the course of two weekends in October.
With a symposium on themes like “Honoring and Breaking with Lineage,” the 2012 Angel City Jazz Festival celebrates jazz music while pushing the genre forward into new musical territory. Produced by Angel City Arts, the festival seeks to promote and cultivate jazz culture in Los Angeles while featuring rising talent alongside living legends. The weekend concerts take place at the Ford Amphitheatre, REDCAT, LACMA, and UCLA’s Royce Hall.
This unique festival gives young artists like Ambrose Akinmusire the chance to play alongside their mentors like Steve Coleman, the current master of spontaneous composition. Performers at the Angel City Jazz Festival have included headlining acts like the Mark Dresser Quintet, Vijay Iyer with Steve Coleman, Myra Melford & Snowy Egret, and the winner of the 2012 Angel City Jazz Young Artist Competition, The Anthony Lucca Quintet.
Tickets to individual performances at the 2012 Angel City Jazz Festival range from about $25 to around $35. After the concerts, help Angel City Arts keep jazz alive in LA by checking out the local scene at the jazz clubs and bars throughout the city.
