West Hollywood, Los Angeles –
Located in the historic Sunset Tower Hotel – a one-time apartment building to major stars from Clark Gable and John Wayne to Marilyn Monroe and Michael Caine – The Tower Bar brings old school Hollywood glamour to the modern day Sunset Strip.
The discreet location is still favored by many of Tinseltown’s power players, who flock to the prestigious restaurant after a long day in the office and continue to talk shop under the cover of dim lights.
The space definitely feels removed from the rowdier Strip staples on surrounding blocks, what with all the glistening walnut-paneled walls, white-jacketed waiters, and steady presence of a piano man who welcomes the dinner crowd with smooth instrumentals.
Dinner hours see an influx of successful business types, actors, and chill socialites, who relax over California bistro and French fare and sip delicate cocktails as they stare out at the Downtown skyline through big windows. And seasoned maitre d' Dimitri Dimitrov – well known in elite circles – seems to know all of them.
On Fridays, the bar gets busier when a mix of overworked agents, hotel guests, and savvy tourists take on the extensive wine list, but the vibe remains tranquil and a little more “grown up” than at neighboring venues.
No matter the time, The Tower Bar is a reliable – albeit pricey – source of exquisite libations and established company.
Fancy professionals, posh power players, formal dates, dapper family outings, celebs, older Hollywood crowd, hotel guests, late 20s to 50s.
Live piano and bass player 7pm nightly. Ambient jazz other times.
Upscale menu of California bistro and French cuisine including seafood, steak, lamb, and burgers. Outdoor terrace seating available.
Sides $8–$12, appetizers $14–$42, small plates $12–$18, entrées $14–$45. Beer $7–$9, wine $12–$28+/glass or $39–$400+/bottle, cocktails $17–$20.
Business to dressy: power suits, designer button-downs, blazers, sleek dresses, tasteful fitted attire, heels.
Weeknights for a steady stream of Hollywood shop talk, or Friday and Saturday nights to impress a date and enjoy a laid-back component to the normally rowdy Sunset Strip.
Chateau Marmont (8221 West Sunset Boulevard) offers guests another swanky and historic Hollywood hotel experience, though this one tends to get a good bit rowdier than Tower Bar.
