Booked nightly with an eclectic mix of music, comedy, and various theme parties, Akbar puts an alternative twist on the traditional gay dive bar.

Accents like marble columns, pointed archways, and sultry glowing pendant lamps give a nod to the bar’s regal Indian namesake, though the creative types and music industry folks relaxing at the bar or on the banquettes are usually more interested in their pink cosmos and the ever-present local eye candy.

Those seeking a more intimate nook can slip past the autographed headshots of celebs like Prince, Miss Piggy, and Drew Barrymore and through the beaded curtain, where a second room offers a little ocean of sea-green cafeteria seats for alternative types to shoot the breeze or unwind over after-work cocktails.

The laid-back, conversational atmosphere of the early evening gives way to a flirtatious party vibe later on, when the action moves to an adjacent hall and fun-loving guys and gals alternate between shaking on the dance floor and refreshing their buzzes under draped carpets above the bar.

The crowd can get pretty wild as the evening wears on – even during the weekly craft-making classes on Wednesdays – a sure sign that Akbar is a place where even royalty can feel free to let loose.

The Perfect Getaway From West Hollywood.

Akbar is one of my favorite hang outs. Far outside the glitzy and over the top WeHo bars, Akbar offers all the benefits of a WeHo bar, but feels like a dive. The people are friendly and the drinks are modestly priced. It's a great place to unwind after a stressful week. The bar is split into two separate areas which is great, so if you're not in the mood to dance the night away or listen to blaring music, you can chill in the bar area near the entrance. The place is always hopping during the weekend; however, it can be hit or miss during the weekdays. I've walked in on Wednesdays where the place is packed to the brim, and Thursdays where the entire bar is absolutely dead. This is also a great place for celebrity sightings as there are a few well known Film/TV actors who tend to frequent the bar. Overall one of my favorite spots in LA, and always my go to for a good time.
The best gay bar in Los Angeles!

The Akbar is, hands down, the best gay bar in Los Angeles. They always have the best music and affordable drinks with really cool people. Its small, yet very fun and always brings the best Friday and Saturday nights. I have met so many friendly, unpretentious folks here who welcome anyone and everyone. This is my 'go to' spot for a good time. My favorite night to go would be Friday night for they play more of 80s/indie music that always makes me think of Silverlake. The bar-goers are also good looking which I am always down for! Check it out!

As soon as you enter this hip venue and see glimmering lights bouncing off the dark walls, you'll know you're in for a good night! An eclectic crowd adds a unique twist to this gay bar/club that has the perfect balance of music to shake your thing to and just enough dim corners to keep your deeds a mystery. Come out any day of the week for cheap drinks and chill bartenders who won’t disappoint. Make sure you bring your friends with you because you’ll want to exchange crazy stories over lunch the next day!
Not your typical West Hollywood gay club

When LGTB tourists think of Los Angeles destinations, West Hollywood is usual what first comes to mind. Little do they know that a vibrant alternative gay culture percolates due east, in Silverlake, and Akbar is one of its flagship venues. With an intimate, Morrocan-themed bar and a mirror-balled dance room, what happens at Akbar stays at Akbar....unless you bring your chatty friends. Hands down some of the best indie dance DJs who mix together everything from Peaches to the Pointer Sisters. Go.
lot of fun!

This is a gay club and bar and it is very fun to have a great time at! I made so many friends that were gay and not gay. I had so much fun talking to everyone who was so friendly. I loved the food as well. They had wonderful appetizers and great desserts. I also loved the atmosphere because everyone was so friendly and outgoing. I had a great time with my friends and we danced the night away. I recommend this bar because you will have a great time no matter what! The food is also a big factor in loving this place!
Indie Gay!....Gay Indie?...Gindie? Whatever, good times.

Whether you think it is a trendy hipster bar or a kitchy sort of Moroccan-styled gay bar or somewhere in the middle, Akbar is always a good time. You will see lots of skinny jeans, for sure (I like to bust out my fake thick rimmed glasses to blend in) but the drinks are great (10-ish, so middle ground price-wise) and the music can vary every night so you never know what to expect. This is the place where you hit the dance floor to try out those moves you practiced in front of the mirror at home. Nobody will notice or care. Good mix of gay and straight, solid jukebox if there’s no DJ on the docket, and they normally do BBQs on Sundays, I think. Check their calendar, there is always something going on. Definitely the kind of place you want to go a few times before you decide whether you like it or not.
