Party Earth 901 Bar & Grill Review

The Scene

901 Bar & Grill in Downtown Los Angeles is a sports dive that’s very popular with USC students & Trojan fans. Enjoy a raucous college scene with Party Earth.

Home base since 1947 for some of the best college memories no one ever remembers, 901 Bar & Grill is a mecca for USC Trojan fans and anybody reveling in the madness of nearby Greek Row.

With its bare concrete floors and walls adorned with local sports jerseys, USC banners, and long rows of flat-screens, the “9-0” offers all the trappings of a typical sports dive, right down to a simple menu heavy on jalapeño poppers and chicken nachos.

A typical day finds a mix of young and old patrons slinging domestic pints at the bar that lines one side of the room, or huddling around the elevated wooden tables that dot the center, to enjoy the daily Happy Hour’s 2-for-1 drinks from 4 to 9pm.

Minus a big game – when the place is invariably a madhouse – it’s actually rather chill.

But at night, especially Thursdays through Saturdays, visitors can expect a true college atmosphere, complete with sweaty, drunk USC kids, scantily clad girls enjoying a flavored vodka or…five, and blisteringly loud music pulsating over dance-happy throngs as testosterone-driven alphas work their tightest game in an attempt for another 9-0 one-night-stand.

Either to chill out and ease work/exam blues with pizza and a Miller or get hammered and rage after a Trojan victory (or just because it’s a Thursday), the 901 Bar & Grill welcomes all.

Except UCLA Bruins.

Tip from Lucas:

Show your USC student/faculty ID and get 25% off food and drinks from 11am to 4pm any day except Sunday. The discount is also applied to delivery hours (11am–10pm) if you’re hankering for some corn flake-crusted chicken fingers at home. Don’t have a USC ID? Then go on Fridays for the ridiculously awful karaoke and the $5 surprise drink-of-the-week special.

  • Crowd

Tons of USC students, frat guys, sorority girls pushing their alky limits, die-hard Trojan followers who’ll start arguing against sanctions by the end of the pitcher, downtown young professionals blowing off steam, older sports fans in the mix during big game days, early 20s to late 40s.

  • Entertainment / Music

DJs spin mostly mainstream hits on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Loud Top 40 on the sound system most other nights. Karaoke on Fridays from 11pm.

Several flat-screens tuned to sports with a keen emphasis on all things USC.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Traditional American bar food menu including nachos, wings, burgers, and pizza. Happy Hour daily 4–9pm except home game days. $5 drink specials follow Happy Hour nightly.

  • Prices

    Appetizers $5–$10, entrées $7–$10+. Beer $5–$6, cocktails $7+.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual: plain t-shirts, jeans, jerseys, some business attire by day, transitioning to a mix of tank tops, USC attire, button-downs, more jerseys, short dresses, midriff-baring tops.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Any day for Happy Hour, any time a USC game is on, or Thursday through Saturday nights for the largest display of college debauchery – though that can ensue pretty much any night.

  • Close By

Traditions (3607 Trousdale Parkway) is another sports dive that happens to be on USC’s campus, and that promises live music and even more college kids.

College Life At Its Finest
Nicholas A. Sep 27, 2013
For those who don't know, USC was recently ranked 4th on Playboy's list of "Top Party Schools" in the US. The 9-0 (by city law) is the only bar in the USC area. This makes for quite the scene if you catch it at the right time. The thing about the 9-0 is that it does not get going until late. Students never sleep, so hitting the "Hole" usually doesn't start until at least 11:30pm. Monday through Wednesday are usually the slowest nights at the 9-0, but Thursday night is party night at USC, and after the frat parties start to wind down around 12:30-1:30am, the 9-0 goes off. The 9-0 (or "901 Club", as the older alumni call it) holds a special place in Trojan hearts, despite the over-priced drinks, poor upkeep, and occasional undercover police trying to bust the 70% of students who are definitely under 21 years of age. The food is actually very good, and their drink specials and happy hours cater to a slightly older crowd (at least older than the underage undergraduates). Get to know Big Sean, go every week, and maybe he'll let you use the "Short Line" someday.
The typical college bar that will cater to your desires
Iuna D. May 29, 2013
The 901 Bar and Grill, more commonly known as “The 9-0,” is the epitome of a stereotypical college bar. Sundays and Mondays aside, the 9-0 is guaranteed to be crowded on almost every other night after 11 p.m., which is a plus for some, but a deterrent for others. On weekend nights, expect to be waiting in line anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, so if you’re not equipped with a lot of patience, this probably isn’t the right place for you. The crowd largely consists of young USC students, mostly sorority girls and frat brothers who like to push their limits with alcohol. Needless to say, if you’re looking for a peaceful night, sipping on beer and chatting with a dear friend, you should definitely avoid this place during late hours. Simply put, the 9-0 gets really rowdy and really loud. But it can be incredibly fun if you’re on the hunt for an energetic, wild night. For those preferring a quieter experience, the 9-0 offers a great happy hour deal, with 2-for-1 drinks from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. any day of the week. Though not very extensive, the menu includes delicious chicken wings and an exquisite seven-cheese Mac-n-Cheese that will prevent you from stumbling out the door drunk. Whether you’re searching to have a crazy time dancing and socializing, or you’re simply looking to sip on a few drinks and munch on some soul food, the 9-0 can fulfill your desires, you just need to know the best time to go.
You Will Have A Time. Good Chance It's Good.

It's not the cleanest bar. It doesn't have the best beers. It doesn't have the best music. It has the best people. USC students! We call it 'The 9-0' and we don't know how to stop we're there. Also a great happy hour -- 2 for 1 drinks, if you don't want to pregame next to your tame roommates. You'll have a bad night or two here, but if you're just visiting, it will be a great experience. Do it. Also, great boneless wings. Just do it. Just 9-0.
Great Bar for a great USC college experience.

The infamous 901 bar and grill is a great place to be social and fully emerge yourself in the USC night life experience. Because the 901 bar and grill is so well known on campus, it is a great way to meet new people and expand your social network at USC. The dress code is casual, the food and drinks are great and the environment is very upbeat. If you want to see how USC gets rowdy and wild, the 9-0 is the place to be. Fight on!
USC's Primary Bar

The 901 Bar & Grill is great for any college student, especially an SC student (or die hard SC fans). The bar is filled nightly, especially on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The dress code is casual and the DJ's play mainstream hits for the most part which gets everyone dancing. The 9-0 is also a great place on game-days. Whether it is an SC football game or NFL playoff game, the 9-0 is the place to be. The bar is decorated with hanging jerseys from the likes of Magic Johnson and Matt Leinart. The drinks are cheap and the food is pretty good also. I recommend the 901 Double Cheeseburger (the closest burger to an n N' Out Burger that I've ever tasted). The downside to these Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights is the same crowds from SC are usually there so if you're looking to meet new people, the 9-0 may not be your best bet. The lines can also get ridiculously long on these nights which can be extremely frustrating. Despite that, this place is great for any sports fan over 21 or just a college kid looking to have a fun night.
Greatest bar around
Kevin K. Mar 22, 2013
Greatest bar in the nation! If your an SC student or fan, you've had a good and bad experiences but you'll always go back! Anyone who goes to the 9-0 leaves with 9-0 stories and its the best place to meet new and old friends. If people are serious about giving the 9-0 a 1 star over food it's a joke... This is a bar that CAN serve food, not a bar you expect to serve food. Drink until you drop...9-0 is the greatest, plus the only fun place to party near campus. Fight On! And always go to the 9-0
what to do when there is nothing to do

What can be said about the 9O1 bar and grill, or better known as the "9O", that hasn't already been said by every USC student. Crowded, dark, loud, and sketchy are all words often used in conjunction with the 9O. The 9O is the place to be when the real party has been shut down. Management not only seems aware of their sub-par standing among students but they seem to embrace it. The decor and arrangement reflect an attitude of "hey, your clearly here because you had no where else to be, lets take advantage of that". Drinks are often overpriced and poorly made but when it's 2 o clock in the morning who really cares right? When it comes to food-wait the 9O makes food??. Overrall, it's better to go somewhere else but if you cant then the 9O is perfect for you.
USC Institution
Amanda M. Feb 18, 2013
Yes we USC kids know. The 90 is tiny, dirty, drinks are overpriced…we don’t care this is the place where everybody knows your name. Give a smile to Big Sean at the front door and enter a USC institution. Tuesdays-Thursdays are the big nights but wait until at the earliest 10:30. Game days are wild with alumni and students mingling to cheer (or cry) over the Trojans. May not be the best bar you ever frequent but if you are a USC student it’ll be one of your most cherished and story filled destinations.
The place to be
Gloria L. Feb 12, 2013
If you're looking for a place to take a load off and relax from the stress of life, or a place to enjoy the big game, this is the place to be! Whether you come with a group or by yourself, your experience will be all the same: you'll leave thinking of the next time you'll be back again. Upon walking in, there is no doubt that this bar is a place that bleeds yellow and crimson--with their extensive collection of SC paraphernalia and endless amounts of Greek members creating memories to last the rest of their college careers. If you're a student at USC, or live close by, forget street parking and walk on over! With the amount of fun mixed with nightly happy hour drinks you'll be having, a little walk home would probably do you some good.
The 9-0- the little bar around the corner…
Ellie D. Jan 9, 2013
Ohh the 9-0. Although the full name of this famous (or sometimes infamous) college bar is the 901 Bar and Grill, USC students and locals affectionately call it as the 9-0. The 9-0 is THE place to go for USC students and recently graduated alumni. Mainly because it is the only bar walking distance from campus besides Traddies, which is located on campus. But time and time again, the 9-0 rules as the clear heavyweight favorite. During the school year this bar is always buzzing, especially on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Friday nights feature karaoke and there are drink specials every day of the week (all drinks are doubles) 9pm to closing. My personal favorite is the drink special on Monday’s- the Dirty Shirley Temple ($5). Also, for those poor starving college students, the 9-0 features daily happy hour, 2 for 1 all drinks, 4pm-9pm and if you show your USC student ID- 25% off food and Drinks (faculty, too) during dine-in hours and delivery, 7 days a week. This is a great place to go to see and meet fellow USC students. Frat boys, sorority chicks, hipsters, nerds and athletes alike can all be found in this watering hole at any given night. I will warn that the 9-0 can be quite dead and hit or miss during the summer and holiday breaks. There isn’t a lot of bar space, so on the popular nights it is best to get there around 10pm to avoid a long line of waiting. However, once inside, the music is great ranging from hip-hop to top 40 hits to club bangers, and I warn you- it will be packed. If you do want to find a minimal space to dance, I recommend heading to the back-right corner. That is where most of the USC student-athletes hang out as well. On nights like this, I recommend being [at least] slightly intoxicated or else one might get quite annoyed. There is no doubt that the beloved USC 9-0 is a dive bar- but we love it unconditionally, like a mother duck loves her ugly duckling.
Trojans love the 90
Nikole G. Dec 26, 2012
The 901 Bar & Grill, or 90 as it is affectionately called by its customers, is THE bar of USC. Although the university does feature an on-campus bar that is open to students, the 90 remains the favorite amongst Trojans. Since it is situated so close to the Row and other fast food joints, it provides an ideal way to end one's night. As a USC student myself, I can honestly say that it proves itself to be extremely fun on its most popular nights-Tuesdays and Thursdays. But it also is a great option when there seems to be no other alternative occurring around campus. Fridays are karaoke nights, which are always fun, and the 90s drinks are pretty affordable in comparison to bars located in Downtown. It is guaranteed that you will run into someone you know but thats always makes for a great time!
THE Usc bar
Eva L. Dec 5, 2012
This bar is a staple for all USC students. Almost any day of the week, you can go and most likely find at least a couple of your friends. It is definitely a fun atmosphere on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. However, it can get pretty crowded and almost impossible to move around to find your friends or even go to the bathroom. People can get pretty mad if you spill your drink on them. Although it’s not the best bar, I love the 90 because it is a place to go meet your friends and almost always guarantees a fun story for the next morning.
Decent
Sydney S. Dec 3, 2012
It is the only bar in walking distance of USC. They usually are packed with college student. However, if there were another other bar around the university, the 901 bar and grill would definitely not be my first choice. It doesn't feel like a bar, it has more of a club atmosphere in the sense that there is a dance floor and loud music. It always has an extremely long line. Lunch box is the best.
great times to be had at the 90
Jenica F. Dec 3, 2012
The 90 is a favorite hotspot of all USC students. It is one of the only bars in walking distance, and by far the closest to our beloved Greek row. It is guaranteed to be packed on any given night of the week, with drunk college kids having a great time. Everyone knows everyone, and there are sometimes fun events, like 90s night! Big Sean works the door, allowing those who pass his careful inspection to enjoy the delights within – the AMF is a popular choice, consisting of a dangerous number of different kinds of hard liquor (tequila, vodka, rum…the list goes on), and a mysterious blue mixer. When you see students with bright blue tongues wandering the row, you know they’ve made a stop at the 90. However, if you aren’t a college student, I wouldn’t highly recommend it – it is, by all accounts, a dive bar, with typical bar food, just a few special drinks, and a lot of special people.
Crazy Fun
Olivia C. Dec 3, 2012
The 901 Bar and Grill located on Figueroa is the perfect setting to have a great time with friends. It is not exactly the cleanest of bars but it guaranteed to show you a good time. The music selection is current and always fun. The food served before the place turns into a bar is delicious. It is perfect for big groups looking to watch a sporting events or just looking to have a good time. You are bound to run into some University of Southern California students just walking by the place. Definitely have to try this place at least once to see if its for you.
nine ooo
Erica D. Dec 3, 2012
The 90 is filled with USC students which makes it very fun when all of your friends are there! It's usually crowded when nothing is happening on the row, or towards the end of the night. Although it's not the nicest place and often gets very crowded it's the most popular bar on campus. It's location is extremely convenient as its down the block from the row. When you know a lot of people at the 90 then it can be very fun!! I've had some extremely fun nights at the 90, however some alright experiences. It's most fun when all of your friends are there together, not so much fun when you don't know a lot of people there.
90
Brianna B. Dec 3, 2012
The 901 Bar and Grill is a little hole in the wall bar located near usc campus. It is very convenient for students who live near campus because it is located near the sorority and fraternity row so kids can go drink and not have to worry about driving anywhere after. This is not a nice place to bring someone if you are tying to impress them. The 90, also known as the 9hole, is not kept up well. It is not clean, hardly ever has toilet paper or even a working toilet, however it is a great place to go and let your hair down if youre just looking for a good time.
The place to go
Brittney B. Dec 3, 2012
The 90 is the perfect place to end your night at. As the only bar in walking distance of USC I could not ask for a better place to meet all my friends after a fun night on the row. The drinks are strong. The food is delicious. And there is nothing better the a 90 bartab or during the happiest of hours before 9. It's convenient and close and who doesn’t love Jay J or Big Sean. It gets pretty packed though so make sure to drink a little before hand and get there early so you can skip the line and handle the pushing and shoving.
Mustttt
Sydnie S. Dec 3, 2012
The 90 is great, especially when there are no parties on the row. Happy hour is the best to go to before 9 if you ever need a quick pre game. I've never eaten at the 90, but the drinks are delicious. The bouncer is probably my favorite person to see when I get to the 90. Although I've never had the chance, I plan on singing kareoke one night. Not only is the 90 very convenient for USC students, but it's very close to both the row and the campus. I don't think i've ever had a bad experience here.
Love-Hate Relationship
Alli H. Dec 3, 2012
I, like many USC students, have a love-hate relationship with the 901 bar. In any other situation, this bar would go out of business. It's a basic bar with crappy food (except for the pizza), and $10 drinks (unless you go for the 2-for-1 happy hour from 4-9), but, as USC students, it's also our only option without hopping in a cab and allows us to all socialize in our little USC bubble. I wouldn't recommend it for non-USC students, but for us Trojans, it's the place to go once you get sick of the frats. Just drink plenty beforehand so you can handle to crazy scene and avoid the expensive drinks and, despite all the odds, you're bound to have a good night there.
Go-to USC Bar
Calli C. Dec 3, 2012
The 90 is pretty much the go-to spot for USC students on any night of the week. Its typically most popular on Tuesday-Thursday, especially since the row has been having some trouble in the past year. The bar itself is nothing special, pretty much just a grungy, dirty bar with semi-okay music. The fun you have at the 90 is based on the crowd that is there. If all your friends are there, chances are you will get drunk enough to have a great time. When its filled with randoms though, the pushing and lack of good music can seem somewhat unbearable. The 90 will always be a staple of USC though, and I can definitely say I've had some greta nights there. Gamedays are also always fun. Definitely check it out if you go to USC.
9Oh
Lindsay M. Dec 3, 2012
The 90 is great for USC students because it is walking distance from campus and has a college crowd every night of the week. The food is great too, I recommend the waffle fries and the pizza. It is not the cleanest bar in the world but the owners do their best to keep it in good condition.
9-0
Jessie L. Dec 1, 2012
If you're looking for a cool, trendy bar...the 9-0 probably isn't the spot for you. However, if you want to go out, have a couple of drinks, and meet some fun college students, i'd definitely recommend checking it out. From Tues-Sat, the 9-0 is usually jam-packed. You might get your foot stepped on or a drink spilled on you, but that can sometimes be a good conversation starter, right?! The bartenders are unusually funny, the bouncers are pretty chill, and the drinks are pretty cheap!
Great Music and Dancing!
caroline h. Nov 30, 2012
The 9-0-1 Bar and Grill is a great place to kick back and relax. The atmosphere is always outgoing and the people are very sweet and nice because it is by the University of Southern California. USC students are very kind and welcoming. I enjoyed my experience at this bar also because there were great music videos playing on the television. They have great music to dance to and have fun with your friends. I recommend the 9-0-1 Bar and Grill because it is a great place to have fun and dance! I promise the food is even as great as the music!
Only if you're at USC
Erin T. Nov 30, 2012
This bar is kinda awkward and weird...there's blasting music but no one really dances. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you're a USC student. If you go to USC it's an experience you have to have, plus drinks are pretty cheap with a student ID/bar tab. Pretty much the best of times and the worst of times wrapped up into a little bar.
