The Village Idiot
Rightfully known as the showbiz capital of the world, Los Angeles is driven by an entertainment and celebrity culture that always seems to be front and center when it comes to influencing the city’s social landscape. On any given day, one can lunch next to movie stars at trendy bistros, attend red-carpet premieres, or party all night at bars and clubs with A-list celebrities.
While the storied fame and fortune certainly exist, there’s a whole other side to this massive, sprawling city that includes some of the best live music in the country, lavish outdoor shopping areas, top of the line restaurants, a beach culture where staying chill is a full-time job, and a climate that creates an endless supply of sunny days sure to please athletically-minded people and casual wanderers alike.
LA may be enormous, but it has so many small pockets catering to every personality imaginable that it’s easy to fill up any social calendar with countless things to do during the day and limitless nightlife options.
Although LA’s glitz, glamour, and access to fame and fortune keep the masses flocking to the city day and night all year round, international visitors, jet-setters, and transplants should be forewarned: the city is almost indescribably enormous and spread out, and last call comes at a surprisingly early 1:30am.
Los Angeles is first and foremost a driving city, and spending a lot of time in cars or cabs heading across town is an unfortunate necessity. The never-ending sprawl is a major factor for partygoers planning a night out, and because the bars and clubs and lounges close down early, picking one part of town and sticking with it is usually the best plan of action.
Regardless of the effort required, however, a night or day out in this warm-weather playground has plenty of perks. In fact, the inevitable run-ins with A-listers, the long days at the beach, the amazing live music, tons of festivals, events, and sports, and the 365 days of sun make LA a playground that most people never want to leave – and with a population of fifteen million at last count, it seems they never do.

Although the media has been prematurely heralding the resurgence of downtown Los Angeles for over a decade, it’s not until recently that the area truly started delivering on its promised potential.
For a long time, there wasn’t much to downtown LA other than financial office buildings and skid row, and a daytime scene of bustling lawyers and business lunches that gave way to a ghost town at night.

Hollywood is without a doubt the beating heart of LA’s nightlife scene, where a diverse crowd from all over the city – whether chic or grungy, urbane or alternative – comes out to dance and party hard every night of the week.
Though a steady influx of posh condos and retail chains keeps the neighborhood in a constant state of gentrification, it still retains a fairly prominent seedy element. Along the gritty, bustling sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard,

Where historic Route 66 hits the bluffs overlooking the glistening Pacific Ocean sits the scenic city of Santa Monica that, along with much of LA’s Westside, has a relaxed and affluent vibe that starkly contrasts to the more hectic areas to the east.
By day there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, as the area’s wide, sandy beaches and adjacent bike paths are full of fitness-minded locals swimming, jogging, and playing volleyball. Tourists and families

Perhaps the more refined version of its neighbor to the east, West Hollywood and its famous Sunset Strip are home to a variety of nightlife options, including renowned music clubs that have helped launch the careers of many a famous rock band.
Among the many other venues are the country’s most recognizable comedy clubs like the Laugh Factory (West Hollywood) and The Comedy Store, kitschy theme bars that cater to out-of-towners, and swanky hotel bars.

Although home to a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic groups, Silver Lake (sometimes written as Silverlake) is best known as the epicenter of the Los Angeles hipster culture – independent thinking, progressive politics, creativity, and trendsetting in fashion and music. Consequently, this increasingly gentrified neighborhood attracts a crowd of stylish urban tastemakers, bohemian types, and a substantial LGBT community.
