Party Earth Whiteleys Review

The Scene

Whiteleys in Bayswater, London is a local’s mall with bowling & a movie theater that offers waiter service! Shop & chill out in London with Party Earth.

Just a few minutes’ stroll from the vast expanse of Hyde Park, Whiteleys mall provides an easy place to shop free from crowds – as well as a great setting for a post-apocalyptic movie considering its mostly empty halls.

Though its sixty-odd stores are housed in a beautiful marble building, complete with intricate spiral staircases and large atriums, the venue has a gritty, urban feel that’s worlds away from the popular and über-mod Westfield Centre a couple miles away.

Opened in 1863, the original Whiteleys was London’s first department store and was heralded as “an immense symposium of the arts and world industries,” even after closing for several years following a devastating fire in 1887.

Today’s regulars are less affluent than at other popular London malls, and the languages swirling in the air are more likely to be Punjabi and Mandarin than French or Italian, creating a melting pot of different cultures, price ranges, and ages.

There’s the expected H&M, all-American Gap, and French Connection, but also cool vintage stores and a strictly over-18 movie theater called The Lounge that serves food and drinks directly to happy college kids and weary parents who left the kids at home.

There’s All Star Lanes bowling, too, which isn’t quite so ageist but still has plenty of cocktails and DJs who spin on Fridays and Saturdays to help get groups of friends, first dates, and after-work parties primed for the weekend.

Its heyday may be long over, but Whiteleys is perhaps a more authentic London experience, and a welcome relief from the opulent estates dotting Bayswater Road.

Tip from Emma:

Since many of Portobello Road’s stalls close around six, Whiteleys is a great place to go if you still haven’t quite tamed your shopping urges – with the exception of Sundays, the shops are open until eight. Then finish the day with a movie or some bowling before hitting a nearby bar or club.

  • Crowd

Local teenagers, diverse set of London’s middle class, ethnic minority families, movie-goers who want some mead to go with their motion picture, groups of friends and office mates tossing balls at pins with one hand and sipping pints with the other. All ages.

  • Entertainment / Music

Odeon Movie Theatre plays Hollywood blockbusters and a selection of independent films, while the fifty-seat The Lounge at the Odeon offers intimate screenings with fully reclining chairs and waiter service.

All Star Lanes is home to six boutique bowling lanes and has a full bar and dining area, as well as DJs from 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Princess Productions television studio is located on the third floor.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

More than a dozen dining options, including an onsite internet café, Chinese food, sushi, a bakery, and Starbucks.

  • Prices

Anything from £2 for a cookie to £250 for a dress from French Connection, but stores tend to be budget-friendly.

All Star Lanes £6.25–£8.75/per person/per game.

Odeon movie tickets £7–£13, The Lounge movie tickets around £18–£22, with food and drinks extra. Full meal at The Lounge £9–£14.50.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual: sweatpants, jeans, t-shirts, school uniforms, blazers, Hijabs, retro dresses, anything goes.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Anytime midweek during the day for a surreal, near-empty mall, or evenings to indulge in film and food at The Lounge or bowling and beers at All Star.

  • Close By

Portobello Road is one of the most famous and celebrated of London’s markets, and the vast offerings can be found just under a mile west on Westbourne Grove to the corner of Westbourne and Portobello. From there, visitors can head north along the cornucopia of art galleries, cafés, and homemade crafts that line the street.
