Adelphi Theatre Information

One of the major West End theaters, the Adelphi Theatre was founded in 1806, but the current building was built in 1930 on the Strand. Reflecting its construction year, the Adelphi has an Art Deco style, though it is more minimalist in appearance than its grand old neighbors.

Productions at the Adelphi Theatre have included Chicago, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and, most recently, Sweeney Todd. An audience of 1,500 can watch the big-name productions on most days of the week, usually Monday through Saturday, choosing seats in the stalls, dress circle, or upper circle, though some upper circle seats are designated “obstructed view.” Box seats at the Adelphi Theatre are also available by making direct arrangements with the theater.

Tickets for the Adelphi Theatre are available through many online brokers, and a limited number of inexpensive same-day tickets are available before performances. Bars and snack vendors service the theater, and the audience may enjoy their refreshments at their seats. The Adelphi Theatre is located near the Covent Garden and Embankment tube stops.

I was studying abroad in London over summer and had a chance to go see Sweeney Todd with my study abroad group at the Adelphi Theatre. Despite loving musicals and plays it was my first professional musical that I have seen and I was blown away by everything! Also... the lead actor and actress were an amazing duo (the lead woman was Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter!) the quality of the singing, the acoustics, and sound set were so amazing that for days I couldn't help but think of the creepiness of the plot (I don't like scary movies) and will never have a meat pastry for the rest of my life!
