Party Earth Founders Arms Review

The Scene

Founders Arms in London’s South Bank offers stellar city views right off the River Thames. Grab a bite, a pint, and a photo op in London with Party Earth.

Sandwiched between Blackfriars Bridge and The Tate Modern Gallery, the Founders Arms is hardly a work of art, but the venue’s stellar views make up for the lack of architectural character.

Many patrons choose to sit on the wide terrace directly by the water, looking out at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge, and the endless fleets of barges pushing their subtle waves toward the cement shore.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows promise a similar view from inside, where black columns separate scattered round tables and high stools that are perpetually taken over by scads of tourists and local businessmen.

Because the bar is a member of the Young’s Breweries, patrons will find lots of YB drafts and bottles at the long bar in back, including seasonal ales, smaller-production brands like Banana Bread, and the ever-popular Double Chocolate Stout.

The menu is fairly traditional insofar as British watering holes go, with the standard fish and chips and sausage and mash, as well as a few burgers and toasted ciabattas no doubt geared toward the out-of-towners who flood the place for lunch amid their explorations of London.

Founders Arms sees its second wave once the nearby financial district clocks out at six, but even when the seats are full of suits and there’s a bit of a line to get in, watching the sunset over the water from the terrace is hard to beat.

And even better with a pint in hand.

  • Crowd

Bankers, financial types, and other financial area professionals mix with tourists of every ilk, their maps unfurled over the patio tables, mid-20s to 40s+.

  • Entertainment / Music

Venue utilizes the Secret DJ app for iPhone and Android, which lets users see what is currently playing in the bar and input their own song requests. Regardless, music tends to be laid back and not too loud for easy conversation.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Brunch menu served daily until noon, including traditional English breakfast, fruit, smoked salmon bagels, and a few vegetarian options. Lunch and dinner menu available until 10pm, including traditional British eats like fish and chips, sausage and mash, steak, burgers, and ciabattas. Sharing boards available after 10pm.

Buffet boards, which provide a light bite for five or six guests, are also available. Boards, which must be pre-ordered at least five days in advance, include options like charcuterie, cheese boards, assorted sandwiches, ciabatta platters, Indian- and Mediterranean-style canapés, or a traditional British picnic of pork pies, savory eggs, chicken bites, fish goujons, and mini-quiches.

Café Corner is a small coffee bar located inside, which can be used to order takeout or grab a quick cup of Jo, especially when Founder’s is busy.

    Reservations accepted. Free Wi-Fi.

  • Prices

    Brunch menu £4–£8, starters £5–£7, entrées £6–£17, buffet boards £30, desserts £3–£7.

Beers and ciders £4–£5, wine £4.50–£8/glass or £16–£28+/bottle , spirits and long drinks £4.50–£5.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual to smart casual: suits and blazers on the financial crowd, with tourists in basic t-shirts, jeans, nice jackets, sweaters, understated blouses, and mostly shoes and boots made for walking.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Any night at sunset for the view over the Thames.

  • Close By

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (21 New Globe Walk) and The National Theatre (Upper Ground, South Bank) are both steps away, making Founder’s Arms a great place to grab a pre- or post-play drink.

Location! Location! Location!

If the Founder's Arms were anywhere else, i probably wouldn't be terribly impressed. However, since it's located smack in the middle of the South Bank, it's worth popping in for a relaxing pint after work. Located just before the Tate, you can expect a touristy crowd. The view is great especially when the weather is nice enough to sit at the outdoor patio and watch the hustle and bustle of the South Bank. It's a little pricey for average food but that's what you get for the atmospere. It's a cool place to go if you're passing through because you can keep on trucking down the Thames and see the fabulous sights of London. But for a local, it's nothing to write home about.
good pub in the centre

Founders Arms. This pub is right on the South Bank which makes it a great place to go if you’re near Embankment or blackfriars in the centre—the globe is right here, so is the best fish and chips shop in London. Beer is expensive (£4.20 for a pint of Fosters) but in this location most of the pubs are around that for a pint. Its modern and doesn’t have the feel of a pub but its not a bad feel inside. Lots of tables outside to have a pint by the river.
