Party Earth Café des Amis Review

The Scene

Café des Amis in London’s Covent Garden is an elegant French-fusion restaurant & cool wine bar. Grab your post-theater drink in London with Party Earth.

An elegant retreat for French-fusion cuisine and bubbling flutes of champagne, Café des Amis is a smart little restaurant and lounge in the heart of London’s theater district.

Just north of the Royal Opera House – and right across from the Royal Ballet School – the bi-level venue attracts a variety of dapper theater-goers, business execs, and trendy shoppers, who settle onto sleek high-backs in the main dining room, surrounding tables swathed in crisp linen.

Earth tones are offset by occasional splashes of crimson and plaid, with a few photos of tutu-toting dancers mid-pirouette on the otherwise bare walls, while the menu mixes French, Mediterranean, and Asian accents, with items ranging from duck confit to garlic-drenched tiger prawns.

Downstairs sets the scene for an after-show drink and perhaps some celebrity spotting, as everyone from classy couples who just caught Swan Lake to the post-work ballerinas themselves can be found cozied up on the soft gray banquettes, sipping French or other imported varietals and cleansing their palates with tapas and charcuterie.

Tucked away on a small side street, the outdoor terrace still manages to feel worlds away from the rest of ever-bustling Covent Garden, so guests can share bottles or a tidy selection of classic cocktails in the open air when weather permits.

No matter the hour, Café des Amis is an ideal stop for romantic rendezvous, pre-game treats, or just a quiet evening with friends.

Tip from Emma:

You definitely need to have a little extra money on hand to eat here regularly, but look into the Amis membership club. It includes a bunch of great discounts like a free welcome meal, half off the a là carte menu, 25% off the total drinks bill downstairs, and lots of exclusive set menus and new drink specials if you join online.

  • Crowd

Successful business types, smart couples, trendy theatergoers, high-end artsy crowd, and a regular showing of city troupes, mid-20s to late 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Gentle ambient music of mostly piano and jazz riffs in the main dining room with a slightly louder mix downstairs, but never too much to intrude on conversation.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

French fusion menu including French classics like moules marinières and duck confit, as well as Mediterranean and Asian dishes like linguine with tiger prawns, gnocchi with sea bass, and a range of sorbets, cakes, and liqueurs for dessert.

Prix fixe lunch and dinner packages available. Smaller bar menu downstairs.

Private dining space available for rental.

  • Prices

    Sides £3.50–£4.50, starters £8.50–£17, entrées £10.50–£24.50, prix fixe £14.50–£18.50.

Beer £3.50, wine and champagne £4.45–£9/glass or £19–£78+/bottle, aperitifs and digestifs £2.50–£5.50.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Professional to trendy chic: suits, blazers, button-downs, long evening dresses, short cocktail dresses.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Any evening after a show at one of the nearby theaters for a solid sexy crowd.

  • Close By

Le Deuxième (65a Long Acre) is a simple but sleek restaurant that tends to stick to more classically French fare.
