One of the largest street festivals in Europe, Notting Hill Carnival dates back to 1966 when a street carnival for neighborhood children turned into a procession led by Russell Henderson’s steel band. Attendance at Notting Hill Carnival grew steadily over the years, leading to more than a few problems maintaining control of the rowdy crowds -- especially since the event technically didn’t have the permission of local authorities -- but became a more stable event with the support of Prince Charles.
The fun jamboree includes a parade of floats, extravagantly dressed dancers, and various food vendors that serve traditional Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken, curried goat, and rice and peas.
Notting Hill Carnival also features excellent musical performances. Past Notting Hill Carnival performers include Skepta, The Game, Toots and the Maytals, and many others. After partying at concerts throughout the day, festival-goers are encouraged to hit up one of the many pubs along the parade route, including Paradise, By Way of Kensal Green.
Tickets are not necessary for Notting Hill Carnival. Food and drink prices vary by vendor.
