In 2006, Marcus Weedon invited a few friends in the event promotion and music business to help him put on a free music event in the parking lot behind The Griffin Pub (which Weedon owns). Weedon had so much fun doing it that the next year he secured a permit to host another concert series in London’s Victoria Park, invited a bunch of bands, and stood back in awe as 10,000 people showed up.

The first Field Day was born.

Years later, Field Day is still in Victoria Park, but now this annual August event routinely sells out with more than 20,000 attendees, and features a wonderfully eclectic lineup of 80+ alternative bands on five stages.

The breadth of Field Day’s annual lineup is evident in a quick list of some of the past Field Day performers, which included Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, The Earliers, White Rabbits, The Concretes, Justice, Phoenix, Les Savy Fav, and many, many more.

Music isn’t the only thing on offer during this all-day event, as Field Day also hosts an area called Village Mentality, where spectators can take part in fun, camp-style events like a sack race, tug of war, an egg and spoon race, ping-pong, and more.

Food and drink at Field Day is also plentiful, with past events hosting everything from hog roasts by Clapham’s award-winning butcher Moen & Sons to Portena’s traditional Argentine empanadas to Yam the Cassava’s authentic creole fish cakes and banana fritters.

The Coconut King also normally brings fresh coconuts to eat and drink all day long.

Tickets for Field Day routinely sell-out, so it’s wise to grab one well in advance if you plan on going. Field Day tickets normally start at around £44.

Parking at Field Day can be a real hassle due to a sizeable lack of public parking spaces in and around Victoria Park, so attendees are encouraged to take public transportation to the event.
