The Old Street area has a reputation for rambunctious bars and a wild nightlife, and Favela London fits right in.
Despite the favela (slum) in the bar’s name, this Brazilian-themed venue is anything but depressing, and its fun factor is apparent from the first step inside.
The bar appears to be a thrown-together mish-mash of wooden odds and ends, but the wacky mobiles and hula hoops hanging from the ceiling, the vintage lace nightgowns peeking from the nooks in the wall, and the bits of scrap metal gleaming here and there all combine to create a truly unique and cohesive décor, with the night’s live band or DJ lording over it all from a raised alcove.
The vibe is happening, to say the least, and it’s clear that the diverse and exuberant crowd of city workers and artsy types show up to have a blast – and they do just that, whether by dancing in every corner, chatting with new friends at the bar, or flirting with the DJ.
And given that the dinner tables turn into make-shift dance platforms later on, it’s no surprise that the atmosphere at Favela London is as spicy and exotic as its cocktails.
Mix of international business types, hipsters, city workers, and fashionistas, early 20s to early 30s.
Renowned in-house DJs play an eclectic mix of Brazilian beats and funk.
Menu includes oven roasted vegetables, scallops, pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread), grilled swordfish, and black bean stew.
Appetizers £5+, entrées £10+, sharing platters £11+. Beer £3.50+, wine £14+/bottle, cocktails £5+.
Smart casual.
Thursdays and Saturdays.
