Shoreditch / Brick Lane, London –
A sleek open terrace perched atop the boutique Boundary Hotel, Boundary Rooftop bombards the senses with small plates of seasonal produce, panoramic views of East London, and the chance to enjoy both while puffing on a fine Cuban.
An array of shrubs and flowers surround the open roof, enticing chic art collectors to take a break from their midday shopping to relax with their mouths full of fresh olives, chilled champagne, or refreshing house cocktails.
Greenhouse-like cabinets bursting with fruit and vegetable plants take over one corner, but most of the space is strewn with garden furniture that’s been jazzed up with cream pillows and heavy woolen blankets for when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
A large awning keeps the restaurant’s main tables in the shade, where city suits discuss business ventures over charcuterie and steaks, while couples congregate around the large fireplace at the roof’s center, nestling on wicker sofas to share a bottle of Côtes du Rhône.
Seating is all first come, first served, so East London fashionistas straight from their boutique studios rush up when evening sets in, as their dapper boyfriends sneak off to peruse the latest offerings on the cigar menu.
A beach-style retreat reminiscent of an Ibizan vacation (minus any Ibizan weather), the Boundary Rooftop may be in the heart of Shoreditch, but it leaves guests feeling like they’re steps from the shore.
Chill mix of moneyed shoppers, model types, older suits, savvy young professionals, gallery hoppers, fashionistas fresh from arts college, savvy tourists, hotel guests, 20s to 40s.
Soothing ambient blues and soul music backdropped by 360-degree views of East London.
Mediterranean-style bar snacks including baba ghanoush, mini chorizo, hummus, and olives, with fuller entrées like steak and organic salmon. Hot food served daily noon–2:30pm, 5:30pm–sundown.
Bar snacks £3.50–£19, entrées £9.50–£23, desserts £5.50–£8.50.
Beer £4, wine £5–£10/glass or £20–£50/bottle, cocktails and sangria £9.50/glass or £23/pitcher, champagne £10.50–£11/glass or £57–£295/bottle, cider £4.50.
Sleek and stylish: Burberry macs, polo shirts, skinny jeans, tailored suit jackets, Jimmy Choo sandals, summery dresses, denim jackets, golf jumpers, chinos.
When the glorious London sun is out (hey, it happens!) or any evening to catch the sunset with a special someone.
Vertigo 42 (25 Old Broad Street) promises a champagne-fueled gala with panoramic views from six hundred feet above London.
