Underground Club

San Rafael, Ibiza –

Just off the San Antonio-Ibiza highway on the outskirts of sleepy San Rafael, Underground is an unassuming nightspot housed in a traditional Ibizan estate.

Consisting of a small room with a bar, a larger room with a DJ booth and dance floor, and a spacious terrace with plenty of seating, the rustic structure looks much as it did before becoming a club.

Projections on the windows and walls display large blowups of the owner’s photography, while the sometimes blinding colored track and floor lighting creates stark shadows where people seem to disappear.

Steps away, an array of plants, trees, and fountains contributes a touch of mellow to the terrace, making it the place to go for a break from the chaos on the dance floor.

A favorite with a colorful and outgoing local crowd, the club enhances its aura of “underground cool” by hosting raucous parties advertised only by word of mouth or text messages – a practice that means patrons may show up to find a low-key sociable oasis or a spontaneous blowout that has Underground packed to the rafters.
