Musée Océanographique de Monaco Museum

Musée Océanographique de Monaco is a museum for marine sciences in Monte Carlo commissioned by Prince Albert I in 1901. The museum houses over 6,000 sea animal specimens, many of which were collected during Prince Albert’s expeditions.

Situated on a cliff side, the museum features an aquarium with 4,000 species of fish, a shark lagoon, and a rooftop restaurant with stunning views overlooking the Rock of Monaco.

Musée Océanographique, which was once under the direction of French naval officer Jacques Cousteau, has both temporary and permanent collections. Le Salle Whale is the institution’s whale exhibit, which has various marine mammal skeletons on display. The Musée also houses maritime artwork including paintings, drawings, prints, and ceramics.

Other features of Musée Océanographique de Monaco include a family area called Turtle Island, a library, and a reading room. The museum often hosts lectures and seminars on marine science as well.
