French Riviera Jazz Clubs Overview

Not totally chock-full of jazz clubs and haunts, the French Riviera does however have a fairly long jazz history and has been the stomping ground for many jazz greats since the mid-20th Century.

French Riviera jazz clubs are pretty spread out in the towns all along the Mediterranean. One thing that binds them all together though is the two incredible jazz festivals in Nice and Juan-les-Pins. The Nice festival was the first to bring jazz to the Riviera in 1948 when Dizzy Gillespie unleashed his trumpet on the unsuspecting French elite. Later, musical greats like B.B. King, Ray Charles, and Muddy Waters all graced the stage during this summer festival. Jazz a Juan meanwhile, has been running for over 50 years and seen the likes of Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and later Norah Jones.

One of the best French Riviera jazz clubs is a little bar called the Sun 7 Café (pronounced Sun Set Café), where young and old in the city of Cannes flock to hear toe-tapping tunes five nights a week. During the Cannes Film Festival, the venue is known to fill up with the occasional celebrity guest, and maybe if you’re lucky, one of them will grace the stage for an impromptu performance.
